This week’s topic for The Homeschool Village is What are you planning to teach for art?
I admit, art is an area that I am lacking in when it comes to teaching it to my children. Ashley has very little to no artistic talent (or “interest” may be a better word); so she’s not the least bit interested in taking any art courses. Gracie, on the other hand, loves art – she enjoys drawing, painting, and doing just about anything with her hands. So, while we have the entire Artistic Pursuits curriculum at our disposal and will use it some, she basically does enough on her own to constitute art (in my opinion.
Musically, Ashley has taught herself to play guitar and spends about an hour a day playing her guitar. She’s getting quite good, if I do say so myself. (I’m jealous, because I started trying to learn alongside and gave up, do to lack of time, I guess). Gracie takes both piano and violin lessons. She enjoys both and does quite well. She just seems to excel musically.
We enjoy attending events such as shows at various theaters in Lancaster County. As a matter of fact, we just ordered tickets earlier today to see Psalms of David at Sight & Sound in a few weeks – that’ll be both theater AND music.
So, even though we don’t have a “set in stone” art curriculum, we’re filling the gaps fairly well on our own. :)

LOVE it, I have one that doesn;t like art either and two that love it and music is his thing so why pound something in him that he hates? The great thing about homeschooling is being able to help our children be the individuals God made them and for them to use their gifts accordingly.
I don't know...sounds like an artistic family to me...I mean...Ashley taught HERSELF to play the guitar! That is SO impressive!
I really needed to read this post today, b/c I have been feeling guilty lately about this. I think we are like you and do a lot naturally in our family. Tyler (my 8yo son) told our evaluator this year that we hadn't done any art lessons since 2009!!! I laughed so hard at the evaluator's table! He was right. After the New Year started, I tucked away the Artistic Pursuits book and didn't pull it out again.
What a cute blog, Heidi!
That Psalms of David presentation sounds so great! Enjoy!
