As I look back on my life, it's interesting to see where God's taken me, and where I took myself that God pulled me out of. I finally got back to writing, the dream of my heart. Since 1996, I've published numerous short stories, devotions and plays. I've also been active in church drama ministries, another passion of mine. My first novel, The Love of His Brother (November 2007, Five Star Publishers), was followed by The Pastor's Wife (February 2010, Abingdon Press) and The Mother Road (April 2012). A Wild Goose Chase Christmas is book two in the new Quilts of Love series.

Heidi Says . . . I don’t know why, but I often don’t set my expectations very high when it comes to these “series” of books written by various authors.  However, this particular series, with the quilt patterns featured on the  covers, really appealed to me. 

I have to say that I really enjoyed this book.  The characters were all well-thought-out and believable.  I could definitely relate to some of the family “issues”.  Of course, I was cheering for a happy ending (aka love match). 

I won’t tell you what the outcome is.  It’s a Christmas story, after all, and this is the perfect time to add it to your book list! 

A Change of Fortune by Jen Turano

Jen grew up in the small town of St. Clairsville, Ohio, where she spent an idyllic childhood riding her purple spider bike, ice-skating on a little pond and reading Nancy Drew and Trixie Beldon books in her tree house. High School was, surprisingly enough, fabulous as Jen spent time with her girlfriends. She headed off to college with no idea of what she wanted to be when she grew up, but settled on pursuing a career in fashion because she thought it sounded glamorous. Her parents thought she’d lost her mind, but they resigned themselves to her choice and after earning a BA degree in Clothing and Textiles, Jen set off to take the fashion world by storm, only to discover retail was certainly not the glamorous career she’d imagined it would be. She moved to Buffalo, New York to take a job in the buying office of a large department store, learning all there was to know about cookware, which again, was hardly glamorous, especially to a girl who did not have a knack for cooking. She met her future husband, Al, a few months after taking this job and eight months later, they were married. After moving into management at another department store and working that for a few years, the company went out of business and Jen decided she’d had enough. One year later her son was born and Jen hung up her heels for good and concentrated on being a mom.

She began dabbling in writing when her son, then in elementary school, said he liked her made up stories as much as those in his books. It was then that she fired up the computer and never looked back.

Jen loves to write humorous stories with quirky characters and a dash of intrigue and finds historical romances especially appealing, seeing as how she’s been reading them since she was a teenager. Her mother gave her a copy of Kathleen Woodiwiss, The Flame and the Flower, and Jen was hooked on the genre. When not reading romance, she loves to read mysteries, young adult and her favorite series of all time, Harry Potter.

Besides writing, Jen enjoys spending time with her family and friends.

From the time my dad taught me to read at sit-on-the-floor school when I was four—launching me past kindergarten into 1st grade—I have loved learning and expressing what I know through art, music, and especially writing. Education came easily, and I grew accustomed to having my work read and displayed. But breaking out of the family mold, I left college to marry my husband Jim (celebrating our 29th this year.) Since then, life and all kinds of research have provided the grist for my stories. We have three awesome adult kids, and one incredible teenager. While home schooling my four kids, I wrote my first novel. I pitched it for publication, and it became the first of a five book historical series. Since then, I have written three more historical novels and nine contemporaries. The Still of Night was nominated for the Colorado Book Award. People often ask why I started writing, and I say to get the stories out of my head. Some say they’d like to write a book, but I say if you’re not wracked with labor pains, there are easier ways to express yourself. Being a writer is a solitary, eccentric, and often compulsive path. But I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

A Thousand Sleepless Nights by Michael King

When Mike Dellosso won a one-year battle with colon cancer he set out to help readers of his books discover it before they had to go through what he experienced.

“I want others to avoid what I had to go through,” he says. “It was an experience that taught me a lot about myself, others, and God, but one I wouldn’t want to repeat. If I can help even one person battling this disease, it would have been worth it.”

Mike set about writing a novel quite different from what his fan base had come to expect from him. Not a thriller, but a character-driven novel, so he wrote it under a pen name, Michael King, and entitled it A Thousand Sleepless Nights. His publisher, Charisma Media, went for it and the first copies went on sale in October.

Mike’s next step was to determine whether a partnership between him, Charisma Media, and the Colon Cancer Alliance was possible. This month both announced their cooperative fundraising venture, with Charisma Media making a significant contribution to CCA and Mike committing a portion of the proceeds from the book through December to CCA.

Speaking about A Thousand Sleepless Nights Mike says, “I want people to see colon cancer (and all the other cancers) for the monster it is, but also to show it does not need to defeat us. There is hope, there is strength, and there is courage and love. And though cancer may rob us of our physical vitality, it has no power over our spirit.”

In the 1970s, escaping a home where he knew nothing but violence and hate, Jim Harding found work, and love, on the largest horse ranch in Virginia. The object of his affections, Nena St. Claire, is the daughter of the owner—a man who ruled his ranch with an iron fist and would do whatever it took to keep Nena and Jim apart.

Heidi Says . . . First of all, I somehow managed to read through this whole book and never once realized that Michael King, the author, was Mike Dellosso!  I had chatted with Mike in the past because we are both from PA and had some things in common – though his books probably weren’t one of them!

I loved A Thousand Sleepless Nights.  My best friend died from ovarian cancer – another cancer that, in my humble opinion, doesn’t get nearly enough attention.  I’m thrilled that this book was written and that cancer was portrayed for the very ugly monster that it is.  It isn’t pretty.  It isn’t predictable.  It chooses no favorites. 

The mix of past and present throughout the book was great.  While getting to know this family as they were today, we were also learning about their beginnings as a couple, etc.  I found that interesting, and something you often don’t get when reading a book. 

And Nena’s desire to make things right with her kids – also very believable.  When faced with death, we all have mistakes we look back on and wish we could change. 

Great job, Mike.  I’ll be anxiously awaiting his next novel!

No Safe Harbor by Elizabeth Ludwig

I am a college librarian in central Florida by day, but by night I can be found pounding out inspirational historical novels the moment the sun goes down. Love and Lives are Threatened in Camden's Latest Offering

Heidi Says . . . I’ve read a lot of books set in the time of the Civil War.  I’ve always been intrigued with that time period of history.  However, I think All Things New is the first book that I’ve ever read that is set in the AFTERMATH of the war and really, truly depicts what it must have been like for the south to rebuild and regroup. 

Seeing that time period from the eyes of Josephine, a young lady who grew up knowing nothing more than sitting around being tended to by slaves before the war, was a real a eye-opener for me.  Josephine was quick to adapt – to consider the slaves as real people, and to realize that she and her family would have to step up to the plate and learn to care for themselves.  She struggles with her relationship with God, and understanding how He could let all of this happen when she was praying that the South would win the war.

Her mother, Eugenia, on the other hand, had a much harder time adjusting to the changes.  It really made me realize how very pampered the Southern plantation owners were – I can’t imagine living a life were I had to do nothing for myself.  She thought she could come back to the plantation after the war and nothing would change.  In the end, she finally “got it”.

Lizzie, a former slave, has such mixed emotions.  How can they truly be free?  She and her husband Otis decide to stay on the plantation with their young children, but she struggles with fear and anger and a lot of different emotions which were just heartbreaking for me to read. 

The underlying cast of characters were strong and well-depicted as well.  People like the Blakes from a neighboring plantation, the “Yankee” man from the Freedman’s Bureau, Josephine’s brother Daniel, and the various former-slaves all play an important role in telling the true story of the aftermath of the war. 

I really, really loved this book and, while I hated to be done with it, I was happy with the ending.  Ms. Austin, as usual, has done an incredible job of allowing us into the hearts and heads of her characters and not being afraid to tell the not-so-pleasant details of the way things really were.  Some of it, I’ll admit, wasn’t fun to read – but it gave me a whole new understanding.  And, for that, I’m appreciative!

This book is definitely worth sharing – so I’ll be passing my copy along to my mom!

Still Life in Shadows by Alice Wisler

Alice was born in Osaka, Japan in the sixties. Her parents were Presbyterian career missionaries. As a young child, Alice loved to walk down to the local stationer's store to buy notebooks, pencils and scented erasers. In her room, she created stories. The desire to be a published famous author has never left her. Well, two out of three isn't bad. She's the author of Rain Song, How Sweet It Is, Hatteras Girl and A Wedding Invitation (all published by Bethany House).

Alice went to Eastern Mennonite University after graduating from Canadian Academy, an international high school in Kobe, Japan. She majored in social work and has worked across the U.S. in that field. She taught ESL (English as a Second Language) in Japan and at a refugee camp in the Philippines. She also studied Spanish at a language institute in San Jose, Costa Rica.

She has four children--Rachel, Daniel, Benjamin and Elizabeth. Daniel died on 2/2/97 from cancer treatments at the age of four. Since then, Alice founded Daniel's House Publications in her son's memory. This organization reaches out to others who have also lost a child to death. In 2000 and 2003, Alice compiled recipes and memories of children across the world to publish two memorial cookbooks, Slices of Sunlight and Down the Cereal Aisle.

It's been fifteen years since Gideon Miller ran away from his Amish community in Carlisle, Pennsylvania as a boy of fifteen.  Gideon arrives in the Smoky Mountains town of Twin Branches and settles in at the local auto mechanic's garage. He meets a host of interesting characters -the most recent acquaintances are Kiki, an autistic teen, and her sister Mari. Known as the "Getaway Savior" he helps other Amish boys and girls relocate to life in modern America.

One day the phone rings. On the other end is his brother Moriah calling from Florida. Of course Gideon welcomes his brother to stay with him and offers him a job. But Moriah is caught in a web which ends in his death and forces Gideon to return to the town of his youth, with his brother's body in the back of a hearse and Mari and Kiki at his side. He must face not only the community he ran away from years ago but also his own web of bitterness. Will he be able to give his anger over to God and forgive his father?

A Heartbeat Away by Harry Kraus

A Word from Harry:

I started writing my first novel during my last year of surgery training at UK. I was a chief resident, and started writing Stainless Steal Hearts in a call room at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Lexington. It was a crazy time to write! I had a very demanding schedule, often spending days and nights in the hospital. I had two sons at that time, and I recognized the wisdom in my wife's urging: "Now doesn't seem the right time for this dream."

My experience as a writer is far from typical. Having received my formal training in biology and chemistry and medicine, my only preparation for a writing career was a love for reading. The longest thing I'd written before my first novel was a term paper in undergraduate school. My first novel was accepted by Crossway Books and published in 1994, and it wasn't until after I had FOUR published novels that I even opened a book of instruction about the craft of writing fiction. This is not what I recommend to others! Yes, I was successful, but I was bending the "rules" without knowing it. I had a natural talent for plotting, but I realize my initial success may have stunted my growth as a writer. I'd have made faster progress if I'd have gone to the fiction teachers sooner.

I have three sons: Joel, Evan, and Samuel. Look closely in all of my books and you'll see them there. My lovely wife, Kris, provides the basic composition for all those beautiful, athletic, dedicated women in my novels.

When a brilliant surgeon undergoes a heart transplant, her life transforms as she begins experiencing memories of a murder she never witnessed.

The residents worship her. Nurses step out of her way. Her colleagues respect and sometimes even fear her. But surgeon Tori Taylor never expected to end up on this side of the operating table.

Now she has a new heart. This life that was formerly controlled and predictable is now chaotic. Dr. Taylor had famously protected herself from love or commitment, but her walls are beginning to crumble.

And strangest of all, memories surface that will take her on a journey out of the operating room and into a murder investigation.

Heidi Says . . . I really enjoyed the first book in this series – it was classic Beverly Lewis Amish fiction, with a bit of a new twist.  I’m sure this second book will be equally wonderful,  though I haven’t had the time to read it yet (due to a recent vacation).  I’ll come back later with my full thoughts on it.
