Massage those aches & pains away with Wahl

Did you give your kids (or your hubby) your Mother’s Day Wish List yet?  If not (or if it’s not too late to add to it), might I make a suggestion?  Add a Wahl massager to your list!

017Wahl makes several different types and styles of massagers. I recently received the Deluxe Heat Therapy Massager to try out.  Here are some of the reasons why I am really enjoying this massager:

  • It’s compact. I’ve had other massage products in the past, but with not a lot of extra space for storing things in our house, they usually don’t last long because I get sick of seeing a box sitting around somewhere with no real “place to belong”.  This massager comes with a handy-dandy storage case that really doesn’t take up much space at all and will easily fit under the bathroom sink or in the linen closet.
    018
  • The massager itself is streamlined and easy to hold onto. While it would certainly be nice to have someone else do the massaging, it’s quite possible to even massage your own back with this thing!  I love that!
    020
  • It comes with 9 interchangeable heads.  Read it – NINE!  So far, my two favorite attachments are the heat attachment and the triad attachment.  But, there are also attachments for facial, muscle-kneading, scalp, knuckle & joint, deep muscle, spot, and general body.  With so many different attachments, this massager is very versatile.
    021

As much as a hate to admit it (and try to deny it), I AM getting older and I DO have aches and pains. Massage is a very effective way of helping to relieve those pains and even ward off some new ones.  Massage also increases blood flow, which effectively reduces pain tension, relieves muscle tension and soothes inflammation. In addition to providing effective pain relief, massage can also greatly improve circulation, regulate blood pressure, reduce anxiety, and provide an immense feeling of relaxation, all of which contribute greatly to physical and emotional well-being.

I know what it’s like to be a busy, multi-tasking homeschool mom.  I want the benefits of massage that I listed above.  Don’t you?  If you’re like me, you don’t have a lot of extra money or time.  Having a massager like this one handy at your fingertips is a lifesaver!  So add one to your Mother’s Day Wish List, or buy one for your own mom (and hope she’s nice enough to share!)

Better Yet – Maybe you could win a massager from Wahl!

  • Wahl realizes that moms work hard all day, every day, and to thank them, they are giving 50 massagers to 50 deserving moms this Mother’s Day.
  • Through its first-ever Mom Relief Initiative, Wahl is providing the tools to help moms achieve the kind of sought-after relief that causes spas to book out Mother’s Day weekend months in advance, and why the spa is among the top gifts for mom every year.
  • From now through May 13, those who like Wahl Home on Facebook can nominate a mom to win a mom relief package from Wahl, whether it’s your mom, grandmother, wife, daughter, a friend or yourself.
  • To enter the Mom Relief Initiative, simply post a comment explaining why the mom on your list deserves relief—maybe they’re a single mom who does it all, a working mom who never takes a break, a grandmother who’s always been there…every mom has a story and every story matters.
  • Entries will be judged on their uniqueness and sincerity and the winners will be selected once the contest wraps up on May 13. Stories MUST be submitted before then in order to be considered.

NOTE: This was a MamaBuzz review.  I received free product from Wahl in exchange for posting about it on my blog. I do not post about products that I have not used and enjoyed.

My First Hands-On Bible by Tyndale

A few weeks ago, we received a great children’s Bible from Tyndale House Publishers – it’s called My First Hands-On Bible.  Here’s a bit about this Bible, directly from the publisher’s website:

978-1-4143-4830-8 My First Hands-On Bible is the preschooler version of the popular Hands-On Bible, which has sold over a half million copies. Jesus taught with hands-on lessons and illustrations; My First Hands-On Bible uses the same experience-based learning to communicate God’s Word in an active, understandable way. My First Hands-On Bible is a fun and simple yet meaningful way to engage preschool, pre-K, and K children (ages 3-6) with the Bible while helping them build a solid faith foundation. Each lesson focuses on a specific Bible point through a variety of activities in order to reinforce and help young children remember the stories and lessons. Using common household items, you can help your children have a “hands-on” learning experience while engaging them in 85 key stories from the Bible. My First Hands-On Bible doesn’t just retell the Bible stories; it also includes actual Scripture from the easy-to-understand and easy-to-read Holy Bible, New Living Translation. In addition to the stories and activities, there are fun illustrations, prayers, and a special Jesus Connection feature.

Ian (5) and I have been enjoying reading through this Bible  together.  The illustrations are fun to look at and the text is easy for him to understand.  Rather than being a “Bible story book” this Bible actually uses Scripture (from the NLT, which isn’t my favorite, but it IS simple); and the verses are identified with numbers. Through the text are multi-colored handprints, which refer you to other things – little extra notes, questions, activities, and information that kids will enjoy.

After each chapters main text, you’ll find extras like The Jesus Connection (which is essentially a one-line summary of the text), Sing-Along Time, Dos and Don’ts, Let’s talk (with some great conversation starters), activity ideas, and a prayer.

This Bible would definitely make a great gift for the preschooler in your life. It retails for $16.99 and can be purchased directly from the publisher, or from Christianbook.com, Amazon.com, and various other retailers.

1-2-3 Textured Products

I received a craft kit from 1-2-3 Textured Products to review. I do still have a “preschooler” (though he just turned 5 and will be starting more “official” school soon). 1-2-3- Textured Products specializes in hands-on educational kits for little ones.  I know that, as a homeschool mom who is teaching 2 older children, I’ve been interested in things like this to keep my youngest busy.

trans_tractor The craft kits offered by 1-2-3 Textured Products come in a variety of themes – including zoo animals, reptiles, forest animals, holidays, winter, party time, summer fun, fall fun, pond creatures, Christmas, farm animals, insects, and transportation.  Seeing as how I have a boy who HATES bugs, I requested a sample from the transportation category.  We received the Tuggy the Tractor kit ===>

Everything that you need for your child to create a textured craft is included in the kit, except for the glue.  You could easily combine a few kits to create a larger picture as well.

Spring 2011 290 Ian was anxious to dive in and get started on his craft.  I gave him a glue stick, but we found that the extra elements don’t stick too well with a glue stick.  So, I ended up applying a stronger craft glue to the product, and he put on the goodies!  He chose what he wanted to put where and was pretty pleased with the results.

While I probably wouldn’t purchase more of these kits for Ian (I’d say he’s just a bit too old for them, though he did enjoy doing the one that we tried), I would recommend them for younger children.

I was not able to find the price of the individual kits like the one that we received.  They come packaged in such a way that leads me to believe they may be available at craft stores, though.  On the company website, you can purchase Activity Packs (which contain themed sets of 3 textured kits) for $4.99.  You can also order monthly “subscriptions” of these kits, which seems like a great idea for church groups and daycares.

If you’d like to try a textured kit with your child, free samples are available (with a $1.50 shipping charge).  You can learn more about 1-2-3 Textured Products by visiting the website or following them on Twitter

Snap Fashion Jewelry Studio by Smart Lab Toys

snap_jewelry_main_image We recently received the Snap Fashion Jewelry Studio for review. My 10-year-old daughter always enjoys a good craft kit, and this one was no exception.

Actually, that may not be entirely true . . . I think this kit IS an exception, simply because she loved it so much!  It took her no time at all to decide that this kit was something pretty special and she quickly created all the included “snaps” using the material provided.  Spring 2011 285 Then, she started making up ideas in her head of other things she could create using this kit; and she’s been carrying the accompanying book around with her for days, just perusing it and chatting about it!

We even went out and bought extra material for her to use on the snaps.  Spring 2011 286 AND, she raided her dad’s closet for an old tie and swiped a scarf from her older sister – all to feed her addiction to this kit!  She enjoyed sharing her creations with my mom the other day – showing off the things she has created. It’s been fun to watch her excitement.

But, alas, the kit is all used up.  We searched online for a refill kit to no avail.  So, I e-mailed the company, asking if such a kit is available.  I got a very prompt reply (I e-mailed over the weekend and heard back from them first thing Monday morning).  Spring 2011 287 They are currently working on developing refill kits.  That put a smile on Gracie’s face.

One con to this kit is the circle template that is included.  It’s hard plastic and snaps onto the bottom of the “snap maker”.  However, ours went missing the first day and we have yet to find it.  We easily created a new one with cardstock; Spring 2011 288 but, obviously ours isn’t as nice or as durable.  I wish it would have been something that would have fit into the little “pockets” on the top of the product, rather than on the underside.

Snap Fashion Jewelry Studio is a product of Smart Lab Toys.  It is available for $24.99 direct from the company; or you can purchase from Amazon and select retailers. Spring 2011 289 Follow SmartLab Toys on Facebook and/or Twitter for deals and discounts, playtime ideas and free stuff.  You can also subscribe to their e-newsletter, and receive a 25% off coupon with your first newsletter.  SmartLab Toys also has free download-able activities for kids!  Check it out:  http://www.smartlabtoys.com/free-zone.html.

Boysterous Review & Giveaway

One of the things that was a concern for me when I first became the mother of a little  boy was finding decent toys for him to play with.  Sure, there are always cars and trucks – and those are great.  But, I’ve never been impressed with all the super hero type action figures, etc. that are available for boys.  I always found the boys’ aisle in toy stores depressing and borderlining on scary.  It’s ok when they are babies and toddlers – toys are pretty much universal.  But, once they start hitting those preschool years (and beyond) the toy selection is, to me, daunting.

t249_fa7fa98d55f07217d9c96eb95a91b600 So, when the opportunity to review the Boysterous (TM) line of toys from Manhattan Toy was presented to me, I got excited!  Manhattan Toy refers to them as “action figures” but don’t let that term scare you off!  These are unlike any other action figure I’ve ever seen!  Rather  than being small, plastic, hard, and next to impossible to pose without breaking, these toys are larger, soft, and easy to pose without threat of breaking.

t215_0f607233df2b2a21571a93883f9729c4 Instead of being modeled after super heroes or movie characters, these toys are meant to look like ordinary boys.  There are currently 5 different action figures available – Halfpipe Pete, Goalie Gavin, Slapshot Sam, Slope Shreddin’ Sean, and Touchdown Dylan.  Each of these sells for approximately $18, and comes with their appropriate sports equipment.  Each one has arms and legs that bend, and magnets in his feet and hands so that he can “play” his sport with ease.

We received the two action figures pictured above, along with the Boysterous Extreme Sports Zone.  This is a 2-sided playing zone – one side lays flat and is the perfect sports field for playing soccer, football, or hockey; flip it over, zip up the sides, and you’ve got a half-pipe, ideal for the snowboarding and skateboarding action figures to show off on.  Zippers and Velco flaps make this play mat quickly convert into a storage case, complete with carrying handle.  So, all your Boysterous action figures can be kept in one place.

Yes, you could say that I’m pretty impressed.  Action figures that aren’t the least bit violent or scary – yep, I like them a lot!  But, the real test is Ian, right?  What does he think?  I’m pretty sure he loves it too!

Now, for the CONTEST!!! Manhattan Toy is generously donating one Boysterous action figure to one of YOU!

If you would like to win, please visit Manhattan Toy and look around the site. Then, come back here and tell me which product appeals to you the most, and why.

And, just for fun, here are some additional ways you can win (please leave a separate comment for each thing that you do):

I will leave this contest open for 2 weeks, and will draw a winner on Friday, April 22nd at noon (EST).  Good luck!

The Key to the Kingdom by Jeff Dixon

kingdom_v4 Grayson Hawkes learns how imaginative and elaborate Walt Disney World is when he accepts an invitation one sunny day from a trusted friend landing him in a world he never knew existed. Innocently driven by curiosity he finds himself immersed in a heroic adventure. Barely escaping a late night encounter, he finds himself desperately trying to solve a mysterious disappearance while trying to stay ahead of those who are chasing him. Hawkes quickly realizes that unraveling the clues is essential if he is to discover the truth. He navigates through the kingdom where knowledge of seemingly unimportant Disney facts and some divine help are the only way he can discover the lock that can be opened by an ancient key. His world becomes even more complicated when he is captivated by a mysterious woman, causing him to make a series of choices that takes his faith to the brink. Each step is fueled with heart pounding intensity carrying him deeper into a thrill ride of secrecy. Within the walls of Walt Disney World is more mystery than one imagination can contain. Here Disney Trivia is not a game; and the ancient key is the only way out!

jeffdugout Jeff Dixon was raised in Florida and has always been fascinated with the man Walt Disney and the theme park he created. Dixon feels that any guest who would take the time to look would discover a story that will never be completed. It is against this canvas that Dixon paints this mystery, adventure, and thriller. The epic drama carries the reader across the state of Florida to discover details that most people have missed. Each discovery and revelation will have the reader wondering if they are reading fact or fiction. In a quickening pace, the characters find themselves on a collision course with an unthinkable outcome! Fans of Walt Disney will love the history and tourists will find a travel guide that takes them on a trip most guests never get to take.

Heidi Says . . . I’m a huge fan of all-things Disney and have actually been doing a series of Disney-related reviews here on my blog.  So, when the opportunity to review this Disney-themed fiction book presented itself, I jumped at the chance.

Though I read through the book fairly quickly and it held my interest pretty well, I have mixed feelings about this one.

  • Though I’m sure when someone asks you to review their book, they’re interested more in your thoughts on the storyline, I cannot let this review go without saying that I found the book full of spelling and grammatical errors that should have been picked up by an editor.  I have an eye for detail, and these things jump off the page at me.  They tend to shadow my opinion of a book.
  • This book contains a TON of Disney facts and trivia.  Having recently listened to the Main Street USA podcast by Walt Disney World Radio, the details listed were so similar.  As a Disney fan, I enjoyed the little details, but think a non-Disney die-hard might be bored by them.
  • Because there are so many facts in the book, it makes the line between fact and fiction very blurry.  It’s difficult for the reader to determine what the author views as fact vs. fiction.

So, in conclusion, I’d say that this book might be attractive to die-hard Disney fans. I’ve recommended it to my 17-year-old daughter, just because I think she’ll be interested in the Disney trivia that’s riddled throughout the book.  I’ll also commend the author on his characters – it’s very hard to determine the good guys from the bad guys – and, in the end, I was surprised by some of them!  I have to admit that I found the end to be a bit disappointing.

I would consider reading more books by the author in the future.

More information about this book can be found at The Key to the Kingdom website. It can also be purchased (signed by the author) from this site, or at Deep River Books or Barnes & Noble. You can also follow The Key to the Kingdom on Facebook.

Pirose by Reno Rose

Several months ago, a friend of ours posted on her FB page that she had about a zillion scarves and would gladly give some away if anyone wanted some of them.  She dropped a HUGE bag of scarves off for Ashley and me.  We’ve been enjoying playing with them over the winter; but truthfully, I feel like a bit of a scarf-failure.  I could use some scarf-tying lessons to make my accessorizing more fun.

So, when the opportunity to review the Pirose Scarf from Reno Rose came up, I thought it would be fun.  The company’s website opens with a really informative video about the Pirose and all the benefits of it.  It’s worth watching!

The story behind the Pirose is a neat one. You can read about it here.  It all started with a young couple, expecting their first child, and in need of some income.  Inspiration plus perspiration and the Reno Rose company was born.

Gwendolyn-2_medium I received the Pirose in the Gwendolyn design.  This particular style has shades of red, orange, pink, tan, and black.  It probably wouldn’t have been my choice had a gotten to choose the style I wanted.  I probably would have chosen the Ori or Naomi; though it would have been hard to pick.

Here is some information about the Pirose, taken from the website:

Inspired by the grace of a ballerina and the movement of pirouettes, Pirose is a revolutionary, one-of-a-kind, multi-way scarf with endless fashion potential.

Wrap it like a scarf, use it to keep warm at dinner or accessorize for a black tie affair.

From casual to classy, Pirose will transform any outfit to fabulous in a snap!

Why modern women wear Pirose

  • Soft florals, geometric prints and bold colors effortlessly tie an outfit together
  • Transitions an outfit from day to night with more than 12 ways to wear
  • Bias cut flatters all body shapes
  • Easily tucks into purse, attache and suitcase
  • Airy and breathable material adds style and warmth without weighing down an outfit

About Pirose sizing

Graceful, elegant, feminine and beautiful, Pirose flatters every body type. Each scarf is available in three lengths - Small, Medium and Large - but it has nothing to do with American Standard sizing! Fashion is all about proportion - the key is to find the best size Pirose for your wardrobe, and the right one for you might not match your normal clothing size. If you are petite or fuller figured, we recommend size Small or Medium to draw attention upward, which will elongate and flatter your figure. If you are tall, we recommend a Large.

Choosing the right size depends not only on your figure but also on the look you wish to achieve with this versatile fashion accessory. A Small size lends a subtle accent, while a Large size offers a more dramatic effect.  Please note, the sample photos below are for sizing examples.

winter 2010 151 I believe we received the medium size.  I’ve been dealing with sickness for the past several days, so called upon my 17-year old daughter to do the modeling for me.  We had fun playing around with the various ways to manipulate this scarf.

winter 2010 154 What makes this scarf unique is the fact that it has a hole in the center.  Most other scarves are a full piece of fabric – not so with Pirose.  So, while you can wear it like a “regular” scarf (image at left), you can also put the scarf over your head and get looks like the one pictured above right.

winter 2010 152 The Pirose comes in a matching pouch, so you can throw it in your purse.  Start out your day more casual, and throw on your Pirose at night for a totally different, and much more sophisticated look.

winter 2010 155 Also included with purchase is a handy-dandy card that shows you all the different ways to use your scarf (there are instructions for 12 different looks, but really I think you are only limited by your own imagination!)

winter 2010 158 These scarves sell for $35 and are available direct from the manufacturer or at the locations listed here.  I think it’s worth the price, considering the versatility of the item.

Did you buy your PET a Christmas gift?

new camera testing 029 If you’ve been reading my blog for awhile, you probably know that we have 2 Pugs.  If you’d have asked me 2 years ago if we’d ever get a dog, I would have said – very emphatically – NO WAY!  But, sometimes life throws you little surprises!  Over a year ago, the opportunity presented itself for us to get a purebred Pug for only $50.  A year later, I had a temporary lapse in sanity, and thought Sallie needed a sister – so Lizzie joined our family.

These girls are just too sweet!  They add a certain dynamic to our family that wasn’t there before (sometimes it’s stress, but that’s beside the point).  In any case, we love them – so, of course, we want to get them Christmas presents (I’ve got some ready and tucked away for them!)

We had the opportunity to review some new dog toys from Hartz - - -

47126-hi-nose_divers Hartz® Tuff Stuff™ Nose Divers™ are durable toys with a heavy-duty nylon shell and durable twisted rope that are perfect for tug-of-war games. Recommended Retail Price: $5.99

hartz-dura-play Hartz® Dura Play® Ball: With long-lasting, washable foam-filled latex material, these dog toys are ideal for toss and retrieve games. In addition, its texture is perfect for dogs that love to chew.

Sallie and Lizzie see the UPS man and Fed-Ex man all the time.  I’m sure they must wonder about all the boxes that enter our house.  Needless to say, they were both quite pleased to see me open a box that contained something for THEM!  Their little curled up tails started wagging with delight when I dropped the new dog toys on the floor for them.

The girls love anything that squeaks so they were pleased to hear that both of these toys had a squeaker.  However, the toys we received were a little big for their little Pug selves (both our girls are small, by Pug standards). Sallie will occasionally attempt to carry the ball around, but it’s HUGE for her.  They will both play with the stuffed duck on occasion – often both laying on the floor, chewing on opposite ends of the toy.  Because it is big and they are small, there’s plenty of duck to go around!

Should I confess that the girls and I are rather obsessed with the ball?  If it were not for the fact that the dogs have already had it in their mouth, I might even be tempted to try a chew on it!  I love sitting and squeaking it – it’s just got a really fun sound.  Ian actually tucked it under my recliner last night so that when I attempted to get up, it squeaked repeatedly!  Smart boy!  I may decide to be generous and give that ball to my parents’ dogs who are slightly larger and would be more able to handle it.

I’d most definitely recommend both of these toys – they’d make great gifts for the furry friends in your life!  Be sure to check out the Hartz website – you’ll find a $1 coupon here!

Scentsy ~ mmmmm . . .

I was recently introduced to a new (at least to me) direct sales company called Scentsy and Independent Consultant, Kimberlee Day Chaney.  Having previously represented a home party plan myself (the company formerly known as Home & Garden Party), I’m always interested in these types of companies and seeing what they have to offer.

One of my favorite things to sell when I was in the business was candles.  So, I was excited to see what Scentsy had to offer.  I love candles and smelly things – especially in the fall and winter months.

october-scentsy-warmer In order to do my review, I was able to select a full-sized Scentsy Warmer and a Scentsy Bar.  I chose the October “warmer of the month” ===>

Isn’t it lovely?  I was surprised, when I opened the box, to discover how large it is.  Just looking at a picture on a website does NOT do these products justice – that’s for sure!  The base of the warmer comes with an included light bulb and a cord to plug it in.   The top part is removable (for easy cleaning).

Even though this is considered a “fallish” item, I plan to leave it out in my home all year round as a reminder of all the many things that we have to be thankful for each day.

BAR 2 I wanted a fall scent to burn in my warmer, so I chose the Baked Apple Pie scent.  These bars sell for just $5 and are able to be broken apart into smaller pieces so they last a long time.  So far, I’ve used my warmer several times and am still using the same small section of the Scentsy bar.  It still smells as wonderful as it did the very first time!

Most of the Full-Sized Warmers sell for $30, while some sell for $35.  The size and quality of these products makes them well-worth the price.  All you need is one; however, it would sure be fun to have several!

One thing I LOVE about products like this is that they are much safer than regular candles, as long as you place them on a secure surface that won’t be easily bumped.  Because they aren’t candles with wicks, you don’t get that black residue on surrounding areas (trust me, I’ve ruined several pieces of furniture by burning candles too close to a surface).  I’ve had tart-warmers in the past, but this is the first electric-style that I’ve tried.  I’m impressed – and, when it comes to scented products like this, I’m not easy to please.

DSW-CAPR Some of my other favorite styles would be the Capri color in the Island Collection DSW-ANGO (at left) and the Angora color in the Isabella collection (at right).  These would definitely be year-round pieces that would compliment any decor.

Scentsy also sells Mid-Sized Warmers (which retail for $25) and Plug-in (nightlight-style) Warmers ($15).  In addition to the Scentsy bars, you can also purchase Scentsy bricks (one pound, for $20).  I’d encourage you to check the website for the “fragrances on the go” as well.  There are all kinds of smelly goodies that I’d love to try!

If you’re looking for a home-based business and a way to earn some extra money for your family, you might want to check out Scentsy. You can find more information on the opportunity here. If you decide to sign up, please tell Kimberlee that you heard about Scentsy on my blog. Man, I wish I had more time – I’d totally consider selling these products myself - ‘cause I like them that much!

NOTE: This is a MamaBuzz review.  I received free product from Kimberlee Chaney in order to write my honest review.

DiamondEarrings.org

Are you a jewelry person?  Truthfully, I am not.  Most days you’ll find me wearing nothing more than my wedding rings.

I do like necklaces, and will usually grab one to wear when I’m heading out somewhere.  I’ve also been an earring girl in the past.  But, when Ashley was a baby, I developed a problem with my one ear that actually resulted in two different plastic surgeries to correct, and it’s never gotten totally back to normal.  Since that time, when I do wear earrings, I always go for the fishhook style, as they are easier to put in and the lump on the back of my ear isn’t affected by them.

Enter the opportunity to review a pair of earrings from DiamondEarrings.org.  I thought it sounded like a fun opportunity and figured I’d just pass the earrings along to Ashley to wear and test for me.  The earrings I received were 5mm studs – Cubic Zirconia (yes, not real diamonds) and .925 sterling silver.  They came in a cute little black velvet box.  But what attracted me most about them was that, even though they were studs, the backs were tiny.

So,  before passing them off to Ashley, I decided to give them a try in my ears.  And guess what?  They were great!  They worked perfectly.  So much so that I accidentally went to bed still wearing them.  This is a major feat for me because it’s a very rare occurrence when I can even keep a pair of earrings in all day.  So, I’m pretty much sold on my earrings from DiamondEarrings.org and I think I’ll just keep them to myself. :)

But, YOU can get a pair for yourself if you like.  Wanna know how?

steps

Just go to DiamondEarrings.org and follow the simple steps that are noted on their site.  All you have to do is mention DiamondEarrings.org anywhere on the internet – your blog, Facebook page, or Twitter work great!  Then, simply pay a small shipping fee of $3.77 and the earrings are yours (U.S. shipping only).

If you decide to order a pair, please come back and  tell me what you think.

My Memories Suite

my-memories-suite-package My Memories Suite is a digital scrapbooking software that you can download instantly.  I was so excited for the opportunity to review this product.  I had an older digital scrapbooking program on my desktop computer, but have misplaced the disk and was unable to transfer the program to my laptop.  I’ve been wanting to buy a new program, but wasn’t sure what all was available and what different programs might have to offer; so this came to me at just the right time.

When you purchase and download My Memories Suite software to your computer, you’ll instantly have about 30 Designer Templates, 1,500 embellishments, and about 1,300 digital papers that come with the software.  That’s plenty to get you started at creating some really fun scrapbook projects!  If you get bored with these, though, you can go to the Design Studio at the My Memories Suite website and click on “Free Downloads” to add more fun and variety to your software.  (These freebies change periodically, so you’ll want to bookmark the page and check back often!)

Also available in the Design Studio are plenty of additional designs that you can purchase to add to your collection. You can search by Designer too, if you are familiar with the various designers.  I found some very cute designs here and found myself unable to resist purchasing a few. :)

My scrapbook hobby was quickly put on hold when my son Ian arrived in 2006.  Since that time, I’ve been intrigued by digital scrapbooking, which appeals to me because you don’t need all the extra space and storage for all those scrapbooking supplies (and, believe me, I have a TON!)  Having all of that “stuff” stored on my little laptop – that’s exciting to me!

With My Memories Suite, I can do just that.  The software is set up so that you can start an album and save it, then go in and add to it whenever you have time.  Albums are available in various sizes – just like the ones you’d buy “in real life”.  Once you’ve completed an album, you have the choice to print it out at home or have it printed and bound elsewhere.

I haven’t exactly gotten that far, yet, though I have been playing around with the software!  I had previously purchased a digital scrapbooking kit from another website – I thought it would make a great blog set, but had no idea how to go about doing that for myself.  I was able to create this header for my blog using My Memories Suite:

3-001

One of these days, I’ll figure out how to change my backgrounds, etc. and get this up there!  For now, though, I’m just pretty excited to have created it.  What do you think?

I don’t know about you, but I learn best by doing and a program like this is best figured out by simply experimenting and playing around with it.  Because I don’t have a lot of spare time, I wasn’t really interested in creating full albums at this time; but rather I wanted to try my hand at creating buttons for my blog, etc.  With my old software, in addition to album selections and/or paper sizes, I had the option of creating various envelopes and labels.  Those were the things I would choose to create blog headers and/or buttons for my sidebar.  I didn’t see any such option with My Memories Suite.  So, I created the header above using an horizontal album page; then, when I went to save it, I resized it.  It worked great!

There are some other aspects of this program that are so much fun that I have to share - - -

  • I touched on this above, but I love that you can incorporate your own digital scrapbooking components from other websites into these projects.  That makes the possibilities virtually endless because there is so much available out there.  Just do a search for “digital scrapbooking” and you’ll spend days going through all the links!
  • The Word Art Designer Feature is so fun!  There are so many different things you can do with it and I can totally see my 10-year-old having a ball with this feature!
  • There are tons of embellishments.  You can create shadows behind them, flip or mirror image them, rotate them, and add opacity.  Again, it’s just fun to play around with them to see all that you can do.
  • I did not even take time to experiment with the video & multimedia or music & narration sections, but they are there!  I can just imagine the possibilities with these features!

If you’re a scrapbooker who is looking to try digital scrapbooking, I’d highly recommend My Memories Suite software.  It sells for just $39.95 and you can download it instantly – no sitting and waiting for the UPS man to arrive!  (You can choose to have it shipped, but if you’re impatient like I am, I wouldn’t recommend that option.)

It’s so easy to use; which, for this busy mom, is a huge plus!  It would be perfect for a beginner too. If you decide to purchase My Memories Suite for yourself, I’ve got a 20% off code that you can use in the Design Shop to add to your collection!  Just enter code MamaBuzz20 and buy away!

What’s next on my project list?  I plan to use My Memories Suite to do the field trip sections of my girls’ homeschool portfolios.  I am going to create 2 8 1/2 x 11” albums and add to them throughout the school year.  Then, I hope to have them printed somewhere on real photo paper and insert them into our portfolios.  In the past, we’ve done something similar, but printed them individually on regular printer paper – I think this will not only be much more professional, but also make the portfolios a more precious keepsake to look back on in future years.

You can follow My Memories Suite on Twitter and Facebook.  They also have a blog that contains some tutorials which were very helpful to me. :)  Check them out!

Snikiddy Snacks Review & Giveaway

sn_fries_chedcheese-130x190 A few weeks ago, I received a free sample of Snikiddy Snacks BAKED Fries in the mail to try.  We received the Cheddar Cheese flavor (and I probably shouldn’t say “we” because the package had my name on it and I ate them!)

I’ve tried other fry-style snacks in the past and have always enjoyed them, so I was anxious to see how a baked variety of these fries would be.  I loved them.  They were nice and crunchy and had a great flavor.

None of us are much on sweet type snacks, but we’re all in love with chips.  We don’t have them on hand very often though because, when we have them, we eat them.  The great thing about Snikiddy Snacks is that they are a healthy, tasty alternative to typical fried snacks like potato chips, making them a favorite for families seeking healthy snack options-

  • All Natural
  • Gluten-free
  • Wheat-free
  • No corn syrup
  • Peanut-free
  • No preservatives
  • No trans fats
  • No hydrogenated oils
  • 50% less fat than potato chips

In addition to the Fries, Snikiddy also offers puffs (similar to cheese curls and cheese balls) in various flavors.  You can see the full line up of flavors here.

Right now, if you go to Snikiddy Snack’s Facebook page, you can enter their sweepstakes (by clicking on the sweepstakes tab).  By filling out the sweepstakes form, you will be entering for a chance to win the weekly drawing for a Snikiddy gift basket or the grand prize- a Jamis kids' bike.

Snikiddy Snacks sell for $1.79 for a 4.5 oz bag.  Check out the deals at Snikiddy.Alice.com (where you can get free shipping!) Snikiddy Snacks can also be found at local retailers, such as Whole Foods and Kroger (which are not in my area), or Toys R Us and Babies R Us.

Based on my personal experience with Snikiddy Snacks, I’d definitely recommend them, and will purchase more in the future.

Would you like a FREE SAMPLE of SNIKIDDY SNACKS too?  If so, leave me a comment telling me what you and/or your kids’ favorite healthy snack is. On Friday, I’ll do a random drawing and pick a winner.  Good luck!

NOTE: I received a free sample of Snikiddy Snacks in exchange for my honest review. This is a MamaBuzz review.

Safety Tats Review

logo_safetytat3
I had never heard of Safety Tats before, but this review opportunity came just in time.  Why?  Because my Safety Tats arrived in the mail last week, and we left for Florida on Friday.  So, this post comes to you LIVE from the Orlando area – home to Mickey Mouse.

Have you ever lost your child in a public place?  We have. We were at a local amusement park – many years ago – Ashley was on a ride and when she got off of it, she disappeared.  I was trying really hard not to panic as Brian and I searched all around for her.  Fortunately, some kind lady had her and was trying to help her find us.  I remember that experience like it was yesterday.

With Safety Tats, you don’t have to worry about situations like this.  Had Ashley been wearing a Safety Tat that day, the kind lady could have simply called us on our cell phone and we would have been quickly reunited (for the record, I think she was only gone from us for maybe 3 minutes total – but when you’re the worried parent, it seems like much longer.  Also, this particular incident happened before cell phones were so popular.)

When choosing with Original Safety Tat I wanted to review, I went with the Rocket and Butterfly Boy/Girl Tat Two-Pack.  I wanted something that would work for both Gracie and Ian for our days in the Disney parks.  Gracie’s 9, and could easily memorize our cell phone numbers;  however, she’s also extremely shy and reserved, and I don’t know how she’d act in a situation where she might be lost from us.  Ian’s 4, and I’m sure he’d be way too busy screaming to worry about a phone number.  So, with Safety Tats on their arms, both kids know that if something would happen and they’d get separated from us, they need just go to any park employee and show them their tatoo.

The Original Safety Tats will last for up to 5 days (though they suggest applying a new one daily). These come in packs of 24 for $19.99.  Various styles are available to choose from.

We also received a 3-pack sampler of the Quick Stick Write-On! Safety Tats.  These are neat because they don’t require any water to adhere, and they will last for up to 2 weeks.  Actually, they are much like a good-quality bandage.  You receive a marker with them to write your own cell number on it.  These are great when you’re in a hurry, or when there isn’t water available to apply the Original Safety Tats.  Packs of 18 can be purchased for $19.99 and are available in a variety of styles.

Is there a monetary value on Mom’s peace of mind or your child’s safety?  I think it’s priceless!  I would definitely recommend Safety Tats to anyone who has young children and does much traveling. They are perfect for day trips and field trips also.

NOTE: I received these Safety Tats from the manufacturer, free of charge, in exchange for my honest review of them. This is a MamaBuzz review.

Uncover Exciting History by Amy Puetz

Amy Puetz

This school year, my girls and I have been studying U.S. history, using All American History (published by Bright Ideas Press).  While I like this study/curriculum in some ways, there are other areas in which I feel it is lacking.  One such way is the writing.  I’m simply not impressed with the author’s writing style and I don’t like how it jumps back and forth and isn’t the nice chronological approach we were used to with The Mystery of History.

So, I was very excited at the change to review Uncover Exciting History by Amy Puetz.  I had heard her name before, but not had opportunity to view any of her products.  This e-book came at just the right time.  We were in need of a much-needed break from our history text – so we started reading a chapter of Uncover Exciting History each day until we got caught up to where we were in our study.  Now we go back and forth.

We’ve all enjoyed Amy’s writing style.  It makes the history that we’re studying seem so much more “real” and applicable.  The history stories just really came to life once we read Amy’s version. Now, looking back on our school year, we find ourselves discussing what we read in Uncover Exciting History much more than we do what was in the actual textbook. I will definitely consider purchasing other resources from Amy in the future.

Here’s what Amy’s website says about the book:

Uncover Exciting History

History Is Not Boring!

What is history anyway? It is the story of real people who did real things. For history to be fun for everyone (even those who think they hate history), it must go beyond hard facts and meaningless dates to the real people who made the significant events happen. People like George Washington, who bravely crossed the partly frozen Delaware River to attack the British at Trenton. Stories like that of the bold Americans who bravely fought against the Barbary pirates during the little-known Barbary War show how interesting history is.

True History Is Exciting!

Here are some of the stories in this book:

  • Discover how the U.S. created the Constitution
  • Experience the miraculous victory at the Battle of New Orleans
  • Explore America's expansion west
  • Uncover one of America's best weapons used during World War II

This book is great for:
  • History Buffs
  • Those who want the story behind the event
  • Adults who want a snapshot view of American history
  • Homeschool families, either as a read aloud or for students 12 and up

In this 184 page book you will meet some of America's most famous people like George Washington and some of her not so famous people like Daniel Webster. Click here to see the table of contents. There are also four bonus chapters! The first bonus chapter is about famous mothers and the next three are about famous explorers.
Bonus Chapters:
  • The Hand That Rocks the Cradle: Mothers Who Changed the World Through Their Children
  • Medieval Explorer: Marco Polo
  • Evangelistic Explorer: David Livingstone
  • Daring Explorer of Antarctica: Robert Falcon Scott

And here’s a bit about the author:

Amy Puetz

Amy Puetz is a homeschool graduate and servant of Christ. In 2001 she earned a degree as a computer graphic designer and began A to Z Designs. CoverMate Review & Giveaway

CoverMate Food Covers

Are you anything like me? Do you have a Tupperware cupboard filled with odds and ends? Do you have containers without lids, and lids without containers?

In all honesty, I got so sick of having my Tupperware “grow legs and walk away” that I’ve filled my cupboard with the cheaper  brands. And, I’ve been known to save things like butter tubs and sour cream containers.  This way, I don’t care if my containers leave and never come back!

CoverMate Food Covers

Recently, I was introduced to CoverMate Stretch-to-Fit Food Covers.  Now, in addition to the fact that I can never seem to find the right lid for my storage containers, I have to confess something --- I hate plastic wrap! If you buy the cheap stuff, it doesn’t stick to anything; and, if you buy the expensive brands, they are so sticky that I have trouble getting them off my hands an onto my containers! Also, I’ve cut myself more than once on the serrated cutting surfaces on plastic wrap boxes – let me tell you, those are some nasty, painful cuts!

CoverMate Food Covers

So, CoverMate Stretch-to-Fit Food Covers are my new best kitchen friends!  They come in various sizes choices. I received a variety box, which includes 4 medium, 4 large, and 2 extra large bags (and a bonus can cover).  The can cover is great if you open a can of fruit or pizza sauce and need to save some for the next day.  The medium covers will fit nicely over a dinner plate (9” or smaller), a melon (for a summer picnic), drink pitchers, etc. The large are great for serving bowls, casserole dishes, cakes, pies, etc. (9-14”). If you’re having a party, then you’ll enjoy the extra large covers which will fit 14-19” items such as pizzas and large party platters and serving trays.

CoverMate covers are NOT disposable.  They are totally reusable. They are also microwave and dishwasher safe.  They contain no latex or BPA.  If you’re interested in trying them out for yourself, CoverMate offers a free sample pack for only $3.95 shipping.  Details may be found at the website

I received an extra box of the variety pack covers.
I’d love to share!
If you’d like to try them out, just leave me ONE COMMENT, telling me what appeals to you about the
CoverMate Stretch-to-Fit Food Covers
or, just for fun, share a funny food storage story with me.
Next Monday, I’ll do a random drawing to choose a winner (U.S. residents only, please).

Exergen Temporal Scanner Thermometer

NOTE: The following review was originally posted on October 22, 2009.

Baby Scanner I have been through my fair share of thermometers over the years.  The first one I received, at a baby shower 16 years ago, was the glass variety.  Let me just tell you, I still have not figured out how to read one of those things!   That was quickly replaced by a digital thermometer because this mommy wanted to know if my baby had a fever or not!    Over the years, we've been through at least 4 digital thermometers.  The first one worked good; the rest, not so much.  I've been disappointed over and over again.  So, needless to say, I was thrilled when I found out that I was selected to review the Exergen Temporal Scanner!

Before it even arrived in the mail, I started doing my research.  The thing that really excited me was the speed with which this scanner reads the body temperature.  With just a quick stroke over the forehead, you have a reading.  And it's amazingly accurate - to within .2 degrees F (that's POINT 2!)  Wow! No more sitting with a crying, feverish baby - trying to hold a thermometer under the arm, under the tongue, or (God forbid) in the heiny (which, I must admit, I never tried!)  You can even use the Exergen Temporal Scanner on your sleeping baby; so no more waking them during the night (unless there's a need for more medicine).

Medical professionals are switching to the temporal scanner, saying that it is much more accurate than the ear thermometers (which were inconsistent), not to mention more comfortable.  I know this to be true, as I just visited my family doctor this morning and had my temperature taken using a temporal scanner.  I commented to the nurse that I had one at home, and she confirmed how much they are loving this new technology in the office.

Do you know what arterial temperature is?  It is "the same temperature as the blood flowing from the heart.  It is the best determinate of body temperature."  I don't know about you, but when my kids are sick, the first thing  I do is put my cheek to their forehead (you just can't "feel" a temperature with your hand).  If it's where my mother's cheek wants to test first, doesn't it stand to reason that it's where I should be reading their temperature with a thermometer/scanner?  Makes perfect sense to me.

If you're wondering where you can buy one of these for your very own, you'll be happy to hear that they are available almost everywhere now - check your local Wal-mart, Walgreens, Babies R Us, and Toys R Us.  If you can't find one there, you can call Exergen at 1-800-422-3006 or e-mail them at  medical@exergen.com.

You can purchase the exergen scanner online with this link (and get a $5 rebate).
