Double Blind by Brandilyn Collins

Every once in awhile, I find myself looking for a good suspense novel – but I don’t like them when they are scary or too far-fetched.  I’ve come to rely on the words of Brandilyn Collins!  Known for her “Seatbelt Suspense”, her books are suspenseful, yet realistic.  They keep me on the edge of my seat.  And, I can usually whip through one pretty quickly – simply because they are so hard to put down once started.

When I heard that her latest novel – Double Blind – was out, I was excited to read it.  Here’s a bit about the book:

9781433671647_cvr_webDesperate people make desperate choices.

Twenty-nine-year-old Lisa Newberry can barely make it through the day. Suddenly widowed and a survivor of a near-fatal attack, she is wracked with grief and despair. Then she hears of a medical trial for a tiny brain chip that emits electrical pulses to heal severe depression. At rope’s end, Lisa offers herself as a candidate.

When she receives her letter of acceptance for the trial, Lisa is at first hopeful. But—brain surgery. Can she really go through with that? What if she receives only the placebo?

What if something far worse goes wrong?

Written in the relentless style for which Brandilyn Collins is known, Double Blind is a psychological thriller with mind-bending twists. Lisa faces choices that drive her to the brink, and one wrong move could cost the lives of many.

Brandilyn_Collins_thmBrandilyn Collins is a best-selling novelist known for her trademark Seatbelt Suspense®. She is a three-time American Christian Fiction Writers Carol Award winner and has also won the Inspirational Readers’ Choice and Romantic Times Reviewers’ Choice awards. Brandilyn and her family have homes in California and Idaho.

I really enjoyed this book.  In some ways, I could relate to Lisa and her desperate attempt to “fix” her depression problems.  I don’t want to share what actually happens to Lisa once she has the surgery, because that would give away the whole plot of the book.  You have to read it!

But, I do want to say that I really appreciated the underlying story here, which had to do with Lisa’s healing in many more ways than just her depression – mainly in her relationship with her mom.

Brandilyn is definitely a talented author!  If you haven’t picked up any of her books yet, go do so now!  You won’t be disappointed.

NOTE: I received a free copy of this book from The DeMoss Group in exchange for my posting about it on my blog. I was not obligated to write a positive review and I only share things that I have personally used/read and enjoyed and feel would be a good fit for my readers.

Full Disclosure by Dee Henderson

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Full Disclosure
Bethany House Publishers (October 2, 2012)
by
Dee Henderson

Dee Henderson is the bestselling, award-winning author of 15 previous novels, including the acclaimed O'MALLEY series and UNCOMMON HEROES series. She is a lifelong resident of Illinois.

Ann Silver is a cop's cop. As the Midwest Homicide Investigator, she is called in to help local law enforcement on the worst of cases, looking for answers to murder. Hers is one of the region's most trusted investigative positions.

Paul Falcon is the FBI's top murder cop in the Midwest. If the victim carried a federal badge or had a security clearance, odds are good Paul and his team see the case file or work the murder.

Their lives intersect when Ann arrives to pass a case off her desk and onto his. A car wreck and a suspicious death offer a lead on a hired shooter he is tracking. Paul isn't expecting to meet someone, the kind that goes on the personal side of the ledger, but Ann Silver has his attention.

The better he gets to know her, the more Paul realizes her job barely scratches the surface of who she is. She knows spies and soldiers and U.S. Marshals, and has written books about them. She is friends with the former Vice President. People with good reason to be cautious about who they let into their lives deeply trust her. Paul wonders just what secrets Ann is keeping, until she shows him the John Doe Killer case file, and he starts to realize just who this lady he is falling in love with really is…

The Deposit Slip by Todd M. Johnson

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
The Deposit Slip
Bethany House Publishers (July 1, 2012)
by
Todd M. Johnson

$10,000,000 Is Missing.

Erin Larson is running out of options. In the wake of her father's death, she found a slim piece of paper--a deposit slip--with an unbelievable amount on it. Only the bank claims they have no record of the money, and trying to hire a lawyer has brought only intimidation and threats. Erin's last chance is Jared Neaton.

How Far Will One Lawyer Go to Find the Money?

When Jared wearied of the shady ethics of his big law firm and started his own, he never expected the wheels to fly off so quickly. One big loss has pushed him to the brink, and it's all he can do to scrape by.

And How Far Will Someone Go to Stop Him?

He's not sure if Erin's case is worth the risk, but if the money is real, all his problems could vanish. When digging deeper unleashes something far more dangerous than just threats, both Jared and Erin must decide the cost they're willing to pay to discover the truth.

If you would like to read the first chapter of The Deposit Slip, go HERE.

Todd M. Johnson has practiced as an attorney for over 30 years, specializing as a trial lawyer.

A graduate of Princeton University and the University of Minnesota Law School, he also taught for two years as adjunct professor of
International Law and served as a US diplomat in Hong Kong.

The Deposit Slip is his debut novel. He lives outside Minneapolis, Minnesota, with his wife Cathy, and children Ian and Libby.

Heidi Says . . . I’m not sure what initially led me to choose this book, as the description doesn’t sound like something I’d select.  However, when it came, I was immediately drawn to it and became very engrossed in it.

While I’m not really “up” on all things legal, the underlying storylines in this book were really interesting and heartwarming.  Cheering for Jared to try to make things right with his father, and for Erin to discover the mystery behind her father’s deposit slip were in the forefront of my mind.

I really enjoyed this book and would read more books by this author.  I wasn’t 100% thrilled with the ending.  But, isn’t that part of what makes reading books so fun?

Submerged by Dani Pettrey

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Submerged
Bethany House Publishers; Original edition (May 1, 2012)
by
Dani Pettrey

A sabotaged plane. Two dead deep-water divers.

Yancey, Alaska was a quiet town . . . until the truth of what was hidden in the depths off the coast began to appear.

Bailey Craig vowed never to set foot in Yancey again. She has a past, and a reputation--and Yancey's a small town. She's returned to bury a loved one killed in the plane crash and is determined not to stay even an hour more than necessary. But then dark evidence emerges and Bailey's own expertise becomes invaluable for the case.

Cole McKenna can handle the deep-sea dives and helping the police recover evidence. He can even handle the fact that a murderer
has settled in his town and doesn't appear to be moving on. But dealing with the reality of Bailey's reappearance is a tougher challenge.

She broke his heart, but she is not the same girl who left Yancey. He let her down, but he's not the same guy she left behind. Can they move beyond the hurts of their pasts and find a future together?

If you would like to read the first chapter of Submerged, go HERE.

Dani Pettrey is a wife, homeschooling mom, and author. She feels blessed to write inspirational romantic suspense because it incorporates so many things she loves--the thrill of adventure, nail biting suspense, the deepening of her characters' faith, and plenty of romance. She and her husband reside in Maryland with their two teenage daughters.

Just in case you’re curious…The real Dani does love traveling. She’s been to some amazing places (Greece, Hawaii, the Keys) and there are many more she hopes to visit in the future.

And while she’s not quite up to sky-diving, cave diving or heli-skiing (too high, too enclosed, too cold!) she and her family love hiking, canoeing, wave jumping and a ton of other outdoor adventures a little further down on the risk scale.

Heidi Says . . . The day that this book arrived on my doorstep, I also received several others.  Though the review of this one was due several weeks out, it was definitely the most appealing to me; so I read it first.  And I pretty much devoured it!

I loved this book.  It had all the elements of a great book for me.  Strong characters (my only issue with the characters were that there were a LOT of them, so at times it was hard to keep them all straight and know where they fit), difficult past, mystery, and light romance.

I liked the setting, and the plot.  I will definitely be watching for more books by Dani Pettrey.  This was the first of her books that I have read; but it certainly won’t be the last.

I passed it along to Ashley when I was done and she zipped through it too, saying how great it was.  So, it passed both of the reader tests in our home!

Roxie’s Review . . . I’ve read many books by Terri Blackstock and, when I see her name on a cover, I know I will not be disappointed!

Downfall is another example of her unique ability to keep a reader captivated. I read the book in one day – I was unable to lay it down! It is very suspenseful and thought-provoking; and, as usual, it has a surprise ending – but a very good one.

I highly recommend this book as I would any by Terri Blackstock.  Keep it up, girl!

Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
False Pretenses
David C. Cook (March 1, 2011)
by
Kathy Herman

Zoe Broussard loves the life she and her husband Pierce have built in her beloved Louisiana hometown. She owns a thriving Cajun eatery in South Louisiana and is married to the love of her life.

But it’s about to become hell. One day, out of the blue, she receives a series of anonymous notes that sends her life into a tail spin. Five simple words, “I know what you did.” Zoe has a secret so terrible it could leave the business in shambles and tear her marriage apart. Unbeknownst to anyone, even Zoe’s husband, Pierce, she has a past—a past she had covered so well she never thought she would have to confront. How could anyone know what she did? Can she find the courage to face her past?

If you would like to read the first chapter of False Pretenses, go HERE.

Suspense novelist Kathy Herman is very much at home in the Christian book industry, having worked five years on staff at the Christian Booksellers Association (CBA) in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and eleven years at Better Books Christian Center in Tyler, Texas, as product buyer/manager for the children’s department, and eventually as director of human resources.

She has conducted numerous educational seminars on children’s books at CBA Conventions in the U.S. and Canada, served a preliminary judge for the Gold Medallion Book Awards of the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association , and worked as an independent product/marketing consultant to the CBA market.

Since her first novel, Tested by Fire, debuted in 2001 as a CBA national bestseller, she's added sixteen more titles to her credit, including four bestsellers: All Things Hidden, The Real Enemy, The Last Word, and The Right Call.

Kathy's husband Paul is her manager and most ardent supporter, and the former manager of the LifeWay Christian Store in Tyler, Texas. They have three grown children, five almost-perfect grandchildren, and a cat named Samantha. They enjoy cruising, deep sea fishing, and birdwatching—sometimes incorporating these hobbies into one big adventure.

Heidi Says. . . I  believe this is the first book that I have read by Kathy Herman.  It won’t be the last.  I love a good suspense novel and False Pretenses did not disappoint.  Sometimes suspense novels get a little too scary for me; but this one had just the right balance of suspense and fiction to keep me on the edge of my seat, yet not afraid to go to sleep at night!

I really liked the characters that were introduced in False Pretenses and look forward to learning more about them as Kathy continues this series.  She promises that it will be a “page turner” so I’ll be anxiously awaiting its release!

Vicious Cycle by Terri Blackstock

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Vicious Cycle
Zondervan (February 22, 2011)
by
Terri Blackstock

When fifteen-year-old Lance Covington finds an abandoned baby in the backseat of a car, he knows she's the newborn daughter of a meth addict he's been trying to help. But when police arrest him for kidnapping, Lance is thrust into a criminal world of baby trafficking and drug abuse.

His mother, Barbara, looks for help from Kent Harlan---the man whom she secretly, reluctantly loves and who once helped rescue her daughter from a mess of her own. Kent flies to her aid and begins the impossible work of getting Lance out of trouble, protecting a baby who has no home, and finding help for a teenage mother hiding behind her lies.

In this latest novel of suspense and family loyalty, bestselling author Terri Blackstock offers a harrowing look at drug addiction, human trafficking, and the devastating choices that can change lives forever.

If you would like to read the first chapter of Vicious Cycle, go HERE.

Watch the Book Video:

Terri Blackstock is a New York Times best-seller, with over six million copies sold worldwide. She has had over twenty-five years of success as a novelist. She sold her first novel at the age of twenty-five, and has had a successful career ever since.

Besides entertaining her readers, Terri tackles issues that she hopes will change lives. Her recent book, Predator, was inspired by her experiences on Facebook and Twitter, and her concern that people posted too much personal information about themselves. The book deals with an online predator who uses social networks as his playground. She hopes the book will change readers’ online habits. Her New York Times best-seller, Intervention, was inspired by her own personal struggles with a daughter on drugs. In the book, a mother hires an interventionist for her drug-addicted daughter. But on the way to treatment, the interventionist is murdered, and the daughter disappears. Barbara, the mother, sets out to search for her daughter. Terri modeled Barbara after herself, and poured many of her own emotions and experiences into that character. As a result, many families experiencing drug addiction have written to thank her for telling their story and giving them hope. Vicious Cycle, Book Two of the Intervention Series, releases February 22, 2011. She’s currently working on Book Three.

Other recent books include a stand-alone novel called Double Minds, as well as Last Light, Night Light, True Light and Dawn’s Light (from her acclaimed Restoration Series). She is also known for her popular Newpointe 911 Series and Cape Refuge Series. Terri makes her home in Mississippi, where she and her husband Ken are enjoying their empty nest after raising three children.

Terri has appeared on national television programs such as “The 700 Club” and “Home Life,” and has been a guest on numerous radio programs across the country. The story of her personal journey appears in books such as Touched By the Savior by Mike Yorkey, True Stories of Answered Prayer by Mike Nappa, Faces of Faith by John Hanna, and I Saw Him In Your Eyes by Ace Collins.

Roxie’s Review . . .  Oh my! Another Terri Blackstock marvel!

I have many Blackstock novels on my shelves and have read several others; I can’t begin to understand where she gets all her ideas and how she presents them so clearly.

Vicious Cycle is a “page turner” – I was unwilling to lay it down until I reached the end. This subject is so timely – involving the drug culture and the harm caused to so many by it. A definitely great book – again!

If you would like to read the first chapter of No Safe Haven, go HERE.

A devoted wife and mother, Kimberley Woodhouse is a third generation Liszt student, she has passed down her love of the arts to hundreds of students over the years.

About fifteen years ago, Kimberley began writing seriously. Songs, plays, short stories, novels, picture books, articles, newsletters - you name it - she's written it. It wasn't until a dear friend challenged her to "do something with it", that she pursued publication.

Kimberley and her family's story have been on the front page of newspapers, in magazines, articles, medical journals, and most recently her family was chosen for ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. They were also asked to share their story on The Montel Williams Show and Discovery Health Channel's Mystery ER. She has recorded three albums, and has appeared at over 700 venues. Kimberley lives, writes, and homeschools in Colorado with her husband and their two children in a truly "Extreme" home.

Thirteen-year-old Kayla Woodhouse’s zest for writing comes not only from her natural ability, but also from her love of the written word as witnessed by her voracious reading appetite. One of only a few dozen cases in the world, Kayla was born with HSAN, Hereditary Sensory Autonomic Neuropathy, an extremely rare nerve disorder. Unable to sweat, or feel pain, she’s also been through brain surgery. But even through a life of extreme hardships, her ever-present smile encourages others to pursue their dreams, no matter the obstacles. In addition to being homeschooled and writing with her mom, she’s an amazing swimmer, and spends up to thirty hours a week in training. No Safe Haven, her first release from B&H Publishers in 2011, written with mother, Kimberley, makes her the youngest author to have a full-length novel published by a royalty paying publisher.

Ashley’s 2 cents . . . I picked up this book soon after Mom got it in the mail, being that I was in the mood to read a suspense book. I am not usually interested in suspense books, but for some reason, this one called out to me. Maybe because it was written by a mother and daughter.
Well, as soon as I started reading this book, I couldn’t put it down. I read it in less than a day. I loved the suspense, the romance, the family – characters. It was all very well-written. Definitely one of those books that keeps you wanting to read it.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian suspense and Christian romance. It’s definitely a good mix of everything right into one book.
I would read more books by this mother-daughter duo anytime!

Roxie’s Review . . . This is a very good book.  It contains some mystery, some politics – interwoven with nostalgia – with a bit of humor mixed in as well.  It kept me guessing as to who was bad – and who was good!  But it definitely kept me reading.

The author has certainly researched the drug trade and the workings of police investigation.  I highly recommend this book.

Heidi Says . . .  I need to preface my thoughts by saying that my mom read this book first and returned it to me with a glowing review inside, stating that it was a wonderful book and I should read it too.  So, I did.  However, in so doing, I misplaced my mom’s written review.  In other words, you’ll have to put up with mine.

We (my mom and I) both loved this book.  So much so that we could barely put it down.  I, of course, loved the historical aspects of the book – the ins and outs of the old house and the references to the underground railroad, etc.  We both loved the mystery and the tender romance.  We will both be anxious to read more of Melanie’s books in the future!  I’d highly recommend Refuge on Crescent Hill and will be sharing my copy.

Simple Secrets by Nancy Mehl

Heidi Says . . . I really enjoyed this book.  My initial attraction to this book was that it was about Old Order Mennonites, as opposed to Amish.  (It seems that there are way too many Amish novels in the Christian fiction marketplace these days!)

I was also intrigued by the suspenseful aspect of this novel.  It’s hard to find a good suspense novel that also includes romance and Christianity.  This book has the perfect balance of all three!

I loved the main character of Gracie and could so relate to her and her thoughts and feelings throughout the book.  The cast of supporting characters in the book were all greatly written too – enough detail to get to know them and actually feel like you’re a resident of Harmony.

This was the first of Nancy Mehl’s books that I have read, but it certainly won’t be the last!  I’m already anxiously awaiting book 2 in the Harmony Series – Simple Deceit – coming this fall!

Deceit by Brandilyn Collins

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Deceit
Zondervan (June 18, 2010)
by
Brandilyn Collins

Skip Tracer Joanne Weeks knows Baxter Jackson killed his second wife---and Joanne's best friend---seven years ago. But Jackson, a church elder and beloved member of the town, walks the streets a free man.

The police tell Joanne to leave well enough alone, but Joanne is determined to bring Jackson down. Using her skip tracing skills, she sets out to locate Melissa Harkoff, now twenty-two, who lived in the Jackson home at the time of Linda Jackson's disappearance.

As Joanne drives home on a rainy winter night, a hooded figure darts in front of her car. In her headlight beams she glimpses the half-concealed face of a man, a rivulet of blood jagging down his cheek. She squeals to a stop but clips him with her right fender. Shaking, she gets out of her car in the pouring rain. The man will not let her see his face. Before he limps off into the night he warns her not to talk to police.

As Joanne tries to find Melissa, someone seems to be after her. Who was the man she hit on the road. Is Baxter Jackson out to silence her? Or is some other skip she's traced in the past now out for revenge?

Brandilyn Collins is an award-winning and best-selling novelist known for her trademark Seatbelt Suspense®. These harrowing crime thrillers have earned her the tagline "Don't forget to b r e a t h e..."® Brandilyn's first book, A Question of Innocence, was a true crime published by Avon in 1995. Its promotion landed her on local and national TV and radio, including the Phil Donahue and Leeza talk shows. Brandilyn is also known for her distinctive book on fiction-writing techniques, Getting Into Character: Seven Secrets a Novelist Can Learn From Actors (John Wiley & Sons). She is now working on her 20th book.

In addition, Brandilyn’s other latest release is Final Touch, third in The Rayne Tour series—young adult suspense co-written with her daughter, Amberly. The Rayne Tour series features Shaley O’Connor, daughter of a rock star, who just may have it all—until murder crashes her world.

Heidi Says . . . the trademark Seatbelt Suspense® definitely applies to me as I read this book on our way to Florida last week.  We were on the road for approximately 18 hours (over 2 days) during which time I started and finished the book.  I didn’t read non-stop; but it was difficult to put this book down.

I had my ideas, while reading, about the final outcome; but Deceit really kept me guessing ‘til the end.  I have previously reviewed another of Brandilyn’s books, and my daughter loved the first book in The Rayne Tour series (she’d love to read and review the remaining books in the series).

If you like a good suspense novel, I’d definitely recommend Brandilyn Collins!
