Exergen Temporal Scanner Thermometer

NOTE: The following review was originally posted on October 22, 2009.

Baby Scanner I have been through my fair share of thermometers over the years.  The first one I received, at a baby shower 16 years ago, was the glass variety.  Let me just tell you, I still have not figured out how to read one of those things!   That was quickly replaced by a digital thermometer because this mommy wanted to know if my baby had a fever or not!    Over the years, we've been through at least 4 digital thermometers.  The first one worked good; the rest, not so much.  I've been disappointed over and over again.  So, needless to say, I was thrilled when I found out that I was selected to review the Exergen Temporal Scanner!

Before it even arrived in the mail, I started doing my research.  The thing that really excited me was the speed with which this scanner reads the body temperature.  With just a quick stroke over the forehead, you have a reading.  And it's amazingly accurate - to within .2 degrees F (that's POINT 2!)  Wow! No more sitting with a crying, feverish baby - trying to hold a thermometer under the arm, under the tongue, or (God forbid) in the heiny (which, I must admit, I never tried!)  You can even use the Exergen Temporal Scanner on your sleeping baby; so no more waking them during the night (unless there's a need for more medicine).

Medical professionals are switching to the temporal scanner, saying that it is much more accurate than the ear thermometers (which were inconsistent), not to mention more comfortable.  I know this to be true, as I just visited my family doctor this morning and had my temperature taken using a temporal scanner.  I commented to the nurse that I had one at home, and she confirmed how much they are loving this new technology in the office.

Do you know what arterial temperature is?  It is "the same temperature as the blood flowing from the heart.  It is the best determinate of body temperature."  I don't know about you, but when my kids are sick, the first thing  I do is put my cheek to their forehead (you just can't "feel" a temperature with your hand).  If it's where my mother's cheek wants to test first, doesn't it stand to reason that it's where I should be reading their temperature with a thermometer/scanner?  Makes perfect sense to me.

If you're wondering where you can buy one of these for your very own, you'll be happy to hear that they are available almost everywhere now - check your local Wal-mart, Walgreens, Babies R Us, and Toys R Us.  If you can't find one there, you can call Exergen at 1-800-422-3006 or e-mail them at  medical@exergen.com.

You can purchase the exergen scanner online with this link (and get a $5 rebate).

I so love these thermometers! The best part is how fast they are because you know a tired, sick, cranky child does not want to hold still long enough for a regular thermometer. Please enter me!

I like this thermometer because it’s so non-invasive you can take a baby’s temperature in their sleep.

I like that it takes ambient temperature into account. That's pretty cool! And, it's fast and non-intrusive. Seems like the perfect thermometer.

Oh! I want one of these! I'm awful at using regular thermometers - the minute I stick one in my mouth (and trust me, that's the only place I'm willing to stick them) all I want to do is breathe through my mouth. That doesn't make for accurate readings!

I love these thermometers! My CNM used one of these when my son was born. I love the fact that you aren't sticking a thermometer in the mouth or ear or underneath an arm of a sick child!

I would love to win one! They used this type in the hospital when I had my daughter 6 months ago and I thought it was great. She actually slept through her temperature checks, something other methods don't allow.

I would love to win this. My kids still haven't gotten the hang of putting the thermometer under their tongues.

I've broken more than one mercury thermometer. I want to rid myself of them once and for all!!!

This thermometer is identical, or at least similar to the one used in our pediatricians' office. I am amazed with the quick response time and accuracy. With a 9-year-old daughter adopted from Vietnam who is prone to pneumonia (she has had this about 5 times since she was an infant) because of a compromised lung, this thermometer would be so useful. At present, we don't have anything but the underside of my wrist to check for fevers.

My ear thermometer is dying ... not to mention that it is prone to errors if not held at the right angle, and varying temperature readings. I like that this doesn't require putting something into an ear, especially if ear infection is causing pain. LOL!! It also means not having to hold a child's arm down to get an underarm thermometer. :-) I'd love to win one.

After taking my 3yo to the urgent care with a double ear infection and seeing one of these in action, I never want to stick something in her sore ears again!!!
