We homeschool because . . .

My daughter Ashley turns 18 next week, and we started homeschooling when she was 5. In some ways, that seems so very long ago; in other ways, it seems like yesterday. Our lives have changed a lot over the years; so have our reasons for homeschooling.

Members of the Homeschool Crew are sharing why they homeschool for the next Blog Cruise.  Here’s why we homeschool . . .

We started homeschooling because the teachers in our school district were on strike for the 2nd year in a row. While I understood that they were frustrated over having to work without a contract, I also understood that their minds were elsewhere – rather than on the children. I figured kindergarten couldn’t be too hard to teach (I wasn’t even sure if I wanted to send Ashley to kindergarten anyway).  So, we decided to homeschool. Now, 13 years later . . .

=> We homeschool because God has laid it on our hearts to do so.

=> We homeschool because we feel it’s the best option for our children and our family.

=> We homeschool because it allows us flexibility in our schedules. We enjoy traveling and being about to go on vacations during off-season (when other kids are in school) is often more affordable and less-crowded.  We also enjoy going on day trips/field trips.

=> We homeschool because we can cater to the kids’ needs and interests. We are able to do music lessons and orchestra rehearsals during the day.  We can choose to learn about subjects that are of interest to the kids.

=> We homeschool because I tend to be a bit of a control freak, so having the luxury of choosing what we use each year and being in charge of the scheduling appeals to me.

=> We homeschool because the more we see and hear about the public school system, the more we know that it’s not a place where we want our children to be.

I’m sure there are many, many more reasons, but these are what immediately pop into my mind when I first hear the question.  Why do you homeschool?

Or maybe you don’t homeschool, but you’ve been thinking about it or you have some questions about it.  Maybe you’re like I used to be and think homeschoolers are weird.  Feel free to leave a comment and ask any questions you may have.

Homeschooling Logan was the best thing we EVER did! It was so painful to witness his misery in the school system, thank goodness that trauma was reversed, and quickly:-) I am so thankful that we have the option to homeschool our children! God is good!!!!

Logan is 18 too, graduated last year and from time to time it is good to review the why.   We started for flexibility and scheduling and continue because our kids would be totally different people without out (and not for the better!)  In a nutshell anyway....

I too love the flexibility of being able to make our own schedule! Thanks for sharing Heidi.
