Sitting in a hotel . . .

. . . in Virginia.  Over a week with no internet (aside for that brief stop at McDonald’s on Thursday) was a real lesson in something – not sure what, though.  I think it may have been God’s way of telling me that I needed some time for myself, to de-stress.  It worked too!

We had a WONDERFUL time this past week!  I will tell you all about it – complete with pictures – this coming week.  I’m thinking it’ll definitely be worth several blog posts, as I had opportunity to meet so many wonderful, amazing people this week.

Just wanted to check in quickly and let you all know that I’m still here. :)  More later . . .

A Matter of Character by Robin Lee Hatcher

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
A Matter Of Character
Zondervan (May 25, 2010)
by
Robin Lee Hatcher

It's 1918, and Daphne McKinley, heiress to a small fortune, has found contentment in the town of Bethlehem Springs, Idaho. But Daphne has a secret.

A series of dime novels loosely based on local lore and featuring a nefarious villain known as Rawhide Rick has enjoyed modest popularity among readers. Nobody in Bethlehem Springs knows the man behind the stories ... except Daphne.

When newspaperman Joshua Crawford comes to town searching for the man who sullied the good name of his grandfather, Daphne finds herself at a crossroads, reassessing the power of her words, re-thinking how best to honor her gifts, and reconsidering what she wants out of life.

Robin Lee Hatcher discovered her vocation as a novelist after many years of reading everything she could put her hands on, including the backs of cereal boxes and ketchup bottles. The winner of the Christy Award for Excellence in Christian Fiction (Whispers from Yesterday), the RITA Award for Best Inspirational Romance (Patterns of Love and The Shepherd's Voice), two RT Career Achievement Awards (Americana Romance and Inspirational Fiction), and the RWA Lifetime Achievement Award, Robin is the author of over 50 novels, including Catching Katie, named one of the Best Books of 2004 by the Library Journal.

Robin enjoys being with her family, spending time in the beautiful Idaho outdoors, reading books that make her cry, and watching romantic movies. She is passionate about the theater, and several nights every summer, she can be found at the outdoor amphitheater of the Idaho Shakespeare Festival, enjoying Shakespeare under the stars. She makes her home outside of Boise, sharing it with Poppet the high-maintenance Papillon.

Robin is conducting a contest for the new book. Join in the fun HERE.

If you would like to read the Prologue and first Chapter of A Matter Of Character, go HERE.

Heidi Says . . . I previously read and reviewed the first  book in this series, but missed the 2nd one.  I wasn’t sure I’d be able to get into this book, but it wasn’t a problem at all.  I thought it got off to a bit of a slow start, but part of that might have been reacquainting myself with the characters.  I did get very drawn in and was rooting for a romantic attachment in no time!

Safety Tats Review

logo_safetytat3
I had never heard of Safety Tats before, but this review opportunity came just in time.  Why?  Because my Safety Tats arrived in the mail last week, and we left for Florida on Friday.  So, this post comes to you LIVE from the Orlando area – home to Mickey Mouse.

Have you ever lost your child in a public place?  We have. We were at a local amusement park – many years ago – Ashley was on a ride and when she got off of it, she disappeared.  I was trying really hard not to panic as Brian and I searched all around for her.  Fortunately, some kind lady had her and was trying to help her find us.  I remember that experience like it was yesterday.

With Safety Tats, you don’t have to worry about situations like this.  Had Ashley been wearing a Safety Tat that day, the kind lady could have simply called us on our cell phone and we would have been quickly reunited (for the record, I think she was only gone from us for maybe 3 minutes total – but when you’re the worried parent, it seems like much longer.  Also, this particular incident happened before cell phones were so popular.)

When choosing with Original Safety Tat I wanted to review, I went with the Rocket and Butterfly Boy/Girl Tat Two-Pack.  I wanted something that would work for both Gracie and Ian for our days in the Disney parks.  Gracie’s 9, and could easily memorize our cell phone numbers;  however, she’s also extremely shy and reserved, and I don’t know how she’d act in a situation where she might be lost from us.  Ian’s 4, and I’m sure he’d be way too busy screaming to worry about a phone number.  So, with Safety Tats on their arms, both kids know that if something would happen and they’d get separated from us, they need just go to any park employee and show them their tatoo.

The Original Safety Tats will last for up to 5 days (though they suggest applying a new one daily). These come in packs of 24 for $19.99.  Various styles are available to choose from.

We also received a 3-pack sampler of the Quick Stick Write-On! Safety Tats.  These are neat because they don’t require any water to adhere, and they will last for up to 2 weeks.  Actually, they are much like a good-quality bandage.  You receive a marker with them to write your own cell number on it.  These are great when you’re in a hurry, or when there isn’t water available to apply the Original Safety Tats.  Packs of 18 can be purchased for $19.99 and are available in a variety of styles.

Is there a monetary value on Mom’s peace of mind or your child’s safety?  I think it’s priceless!  I would definitely recommend Safety Tats to anyone who has young children and does much traveling. They are perfect for day trips and field trips also.

NOTE: I received these Safety Tats from the manufacturer, free of charge, in exchange for my honest review of them. This is a MamaBuzz review.

LIVE from Florida!

. . . with no internet access at the resort (unless I want to dish out major cash!)  So, Ashley and I are sitting at McDonald’s for a bit, trying to catch up.

I’ll post more about our trip (including pictures) next week.  Hope you’re still out there and that a few of you miss me. :)

Predator by Terri Blackstock

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Predator
Zondervan (May 25, 2010)
by
Terri Blackstock

The murder of Krista Carmichael's fourteen-year-old sister by an online predator has shaken her faith and made her question God's justice and protection. Desperate to find the killer, she creates an online persona to bait the predator. But when the stalker turns his sights on her, will Krista be able to control the outcome?

Ryan Adkins started the social network GrapeVyne in his college dorm and has grown it into a billion-dollar corporation. But he never expected it to become a stalking ground for online Predators. One of them lives in his town and has killed two girls and attacked a third. When Ryan meets Krista, the murders become more than a news story to him, and everything is on the line.

Joining forces, he and Krista set out to stop the killer. But when hunters pursue a hunter, the tables can easily turn. Only God can protect them now.

Enter the Terri Blackstock iPad CONTEST: http://www.terriblackstock.com/contests/.
If you would like to read the first chapter of Predator, go HERE.

She is also known for her popular Newpointe 911 and Cape Refuge Series.

In addition to her suspense novels, she has written a number of novels in the women’s fiction genre, including Covenant Child, which was chosen as one of the first Women of Faith novels, and her Seasons Series written with Beverly LaHaye, wife of Tim LaHaye.

Blackstock has won the Retailer’s Choice Award and has appeared on national television programs such as The 700 Club, Home Life, and At Home Live with Chuck and Jenny. She has been a guest on numerous radio programs across the country and the subject of countless articles. The story of her personal journey appears in books such as Touched By the Savior by Mike Yorkey, True Stories of Answered Prayer by Mike Nappa, Faces of Faith by John Hanna, and I Saw Him In Your Eyes by Ace Collins.

Heidi Says . . . I have yet to read a Terri Blackstock book that I don’t like. :)  I actually left this book with my mom to review for me, so I’m sure I’ll be adding her thoughts on it when I return from Florida.

Destination Disney Note

We’ll be taking a brief break from the Destination Disney meme for the next few weeks.  This week, I’m busy packing for our Disney trip – and next week I’ll be at Disney.

I will be posting – LIVE – from Florida next week, so be sure to check in often for Disney pics and other fun Florida updates.

Becky and I would like to put together a new schedule for Destination Disney.  We need YOUR HELP!  If you have ideas for topics you’d like to see featured, please e-mail me.  We want this to be YOUR MEME, as much as ours.  I do have a short list here, but I’d love to add your ideas too.

Destination Disney will be back up and running on Monday, June 7th.  See you then!

Random Dozen ONE 5/19/10

1. What is one really fast, know-by-heart "go-to" meal to fix in a pinch?

Most of what I make is know-by-heart meals, but if I need something really quick because we’re desperate, I’d probably through together some sort of breakfast-type dish or beef BBQ.

2. What is one item you won't leave home without. (Purse and license do not count.)

My credit card (I never carry cash and you just never know when you’re going to find a great deal!)

3. Where is one place you never tire of visiting?

Duh! Disney World (my regular blog readers know this is true!)

4. Share one factoid of your family's history.

I don’t know that we have anything all that interesting in our family tree.  Something I’ve always found sad is that my grandfather’s mother died when he was just a baby.  He was raised by an aunt.  My great-grandmother’s name was Lucy.  I had that name picked out as a “maybe” for Gracie.  I wish we would have had opportunity to use the name.

5. Complete this sentence: "Once upon a time I ...."

. . . thought I could do it all.  LOL

6. If you could win a one year's supply of anything, what would it be?

Frozen blended coffees (frappes) from Sheetz.  The addiction is costly, so if I could get them for free, well . . . I’d drink them daily!

7. "One quirky thing you may not know about me is ...."

. . . I like my berry jam WITH seeds.  I think this must be quirky because it’s becoming very hard to find it with the seeds in stores. I always buy it when we’re at Cracker Barrel!  But, this summer, I’m going to attempt to make my own.  I’ll let you know how that works out!

8. You have one dollar in your pocket. What will you buy?

Not much!  Depending on the day (salty or sweet fascination), it would either be a candy bar or a small bag of chips!

9. "One thing that always makes me laugh is ...."

. . . Ian.  He always puts a smile on my face.

10. What is one thing you could do today to help yourself reach a personal goal?

Turn off my computer.

11. What is one thing you could do today to bless someone else?

Send our Crew selection announcements. :)

12. What is one thing you're looking forward to soon?

Going to Florida (we leave Friday)!

Personalized Necklaces

I feel bad for my daughter, Gracie.  Every time we go into a store where they have personalized items, they never have her name on anything – we’ve looked for jewelry, mugs, keychains, basically everything.  Our oldest daughter’s name is Ashley, so her name is pretty much on everything (when we can’t find Ashley, it’s because that name is sold out).

So, I was thrilled when I was offered the opportunity to review a personalized name necklace. Right away, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to get something with Gracie’s name on it. I didn’t tell her, so she was very surprised when the necklace arrived in the mail.

When selecting the necklace I wanted to review, I chose this print style. Gracie makes her capital G’s like that (thanks to Barchowsky Fluent Handwriting!)  Needless to say, Gracie was just thrilled with it when she saw it!

Picture 109Doesn’t that look cute?  (Gracie requested that I not show her face – she’s so shy!)  We are just thrilled with this necklace!  Not only does it have Gracie’s name on it and look precious on her, but it’s also very well made. I’ve had cheap necklaces that the clasps break on them right away – this necklace it not like that. The chain is very nice – hasn’t gotten any kinks in it, despite many days of wear (and one night that we forgot to take it off!) – and the clasp seems like one that will hold off to many uses.

Here is what the Wow Imports website has to say about this particular style:  This personalized silver name pendant is .7mm thick and approximately 5/8" tall from the top of the first letter and the width is according to name. The .925 sterling silver box chain is included with this funky sterling silver nameplate necklace.

We are really pleased with this necklace and would definitely consider buying more necklaces from this company. They are affordable and would make lovely gifts.

NOTE: I received this necklace for free from the manufacturer, as part of a blog tour for Parent Reviewers. I was not compensated in any other way and the thoughts shared here are entirely my own.

Burnout

bluebag I got my Homeschooling with Heart totebag at the Cincinnati convention a few weeks ago.  It came filled with goodies.  (If you got one, you know what I mean!)  I was cleaning my bag out the other day to pack some things in it to take to church.  I found an mp3 cd of Cyndi Kinney (creator of Knowledge Box Central) talking about Homeschool Burnout.

I must confess something here – I almost threw the cd away.  I thought “do I really want to take the time to listen to this?” But, something made me hold onto it; and I decided to take it along in the car to listen to on the way to Gracie’s violin lesson last night.  Wow – I’m glad I did!

I titled this post simply “burnout” because I believe that I am suffering from burnout – not specifically homeschool burnout, but maybe life burnout. A lot of the symptoms that Cyndi mentions, I have.  A lot of the stresses that contribute to burnout are things that I deal with on a daily basis.

I realize that a lot of these things are things that have been out of my control this past year – issues at church, family issues, the sickness and death of my best friend, work busy-ness.  Sometimes I do get very frustrated and just want to throw in the towel.  Not on life, mind you – but sometimes we moms just really need a break, don’t we?

It made me feel better to know that I’m not alone in these feelings.  I had never heard Cyndi’s voice before and her southern charm was enjoyable to listen to.  Her down-to-earth chat, and her openness about her own self and feelings, made me feel like I had a friend who understands what I’m going through.

In order to relieve my burnout, I’m heading to Florida! :)  I am taking my computer, and I’ll be working at the TOS booth at the FPEA convention and hanging out with my bosses and other work friends; but, for the most part, I’m leaving work and school behind for 10 full days!  I can’t wait.  Maybe, when I get back home, I’ll feel more like myself again!

If you’re suffering from a bit of burnout too, and could use a pick-me-up, I just looked and you can purchase this audio here

miscellany monday

My thoughts are so random and miscellaneous lately, so when I saw this over at Barbie’s (My Freshly Brewed Life) blog, I knew this was the perfect opportunity to share another random post and get away with it. If you’re like me and have a jumbled mess of thoughts in your brain that you’d like to get on your blog, how about participating in Miscellany Monday?
  • 27860_1424234095593_1524984773_1059696_3984430_n Last night, Ashley and I went to see Stellar Kart in concert.  These guys are lots of fun (not to mention cute) and I do actually enjoy their music.  The two bands they had opening for them, though – well, let’s just say they didn’t really cut it for me.  Ugh!  Ashley begged to stay afterwards and get her t-shirt signed and meet the band.  What girl wouldn’t love this?
    27860_1424234175595_1524984773_1059697_1692138_n

  • We leave for Florida on Friday.  I was hoping to get all my laundry done today so that I could start packing. Unfortunately, it’s overcast and they’re calling for rain, so I couldn’t hang anything outside today – or tomorrow – or Wednesday.  Yikes.  I hope we can get our stuff packed!
  • HSB switched to their new system this past weekend.  I don’t even know how to get into the Crew blog now, let alone fix it up.  But, I refuse to be stressed about it.  I’m sure they’ll get things up and running soon.
  • Speaking of the Crew, Brenda and I are diligently working to get all the spots filled. If you are someone who tried out for this year’s Crew, stay tuned --- we should be sending out official information later this week.
  • I can’t believe all the neat people I’m going to get to meet this coming week.  I won’t tell you, though – I’ll wait and post pictures!

Mighty Acts of God by Starr Meade

9781433506048 From the book cover:
From the  creation of the world and everything in it, to a massive flood that destroyed it all; from the dramatic exodus of God’s people from bondage in Egypt, ot the earthquake that released Paul and Silas from jail; from Gideon leading a tiny army of Israelites to victory over the Midianites, to Jesus dying on the cross in ultimate victory over sin – the Bible is full of powerful stories of the mighty acts of God.

In this book, parents and children alike will discover the Almighty God in Scripture. Ninety beautifully illustrated Bible stories are retold in lively modern-day language, teaching particular truths about God’s character. Each story is followed by a section of application with discussion-sparking questions and prayer points that will make family devotions a time of discovery and worship.

From the Crossway website:
"Do as David did. Don't do as Saul did. Follow this Old Testament person, but not that New Testament person." That's what you may find in many Bible story books. In Mighty Acts of God Starr Meade takes a new approach to teaching the Bible to elementary school aged children: she focuses not on characters in Scripture, but on God. Each of the ninety Bible stories included focus on a particular character trait or truth about God, emphasizing that God is the main character in every Bible story.

Each story in Mighty Acts of God is retold in lively, modern-day language from a Reformed perspective, and is followed by an application section with several discussion-sparking questions and prayer points. By moving chronologically through both the Old and New Testaments, parents and children glimpse the person of God as one of consistency, vibrancy, passion, and love.

Starr Meade is a graduate of Arizona College of the Bible and the author of Training Hearts, Training Minds and Keeping Holiday. She currently teaches homeschool students in Mesa, AZ.

Heidi Says . . . We really like this  book.  When I first saw it, I thought it might be just the thing that Gracie and I needed to start off our homeschool days, and I was right!  I have her read the “verse of the day” to me, then I read the lesson.  At the end, we do the discussion questions together.  We don’t always do all of  them; but, rather, I pick and choose the ones that I think most apply to her.  Some of the questions are great suggestions for written assignments (though I don’t think that was the author’s intent – but we homeschoolers tend to adapt things to meet our personal needs).

I love that Mighty Acts of God takes a chronological approach to the Scriptures. I’ve found that things work best for me when they are orderly.  Plus, it just makes more sense that way!

There are “summary statements” shown in colored text throughout the lessons.  These seem to sum up what the lesson is about and introduce basic doctrines that are important to know.  I have Gracie write each of these statements out – she’s keeping a running notebook page of all of them.  Writing them seems to help cement them in her mind; and doubles as copywork.

Words that children may not know the meanings of, as well as theological terms, are bolded throughout. These would make great starting points for discussion also.  I might recommend keeping a “Mighty Acts of God Dictionary” and having your child look these terms up in a Bible dictionary.

All-in-all, I’d recommend this book for any family with elementary-aged children. It would also make a great family devotional tool.

NOTE: I received this book free of charge as part of the Crossway blog review program. I was not compensated for this review in any other way, and the thoughts expressed herein are my own.

And the Magneatos winner is . . .

How are you spending your Saturday?

Here’s how I should be spending mine:

  • Cleaning my house
  • Doing some laundry and starting to pack for Florida
  • Making some Florida packing lists
  • Working on a project for TOS, which requires more planning pages (I’m afraid – after the Schoolhouse Planner – I’m all planned out!)

But, instead, here’s what I’m doing:

  • Checking Facebook
  • Answering e-mails (well, that’s kinda work, really)
  • Rearranging Gracie’s bedroom
  • Obviously, blogging!

Ashley is spending the night with a friend from church.  I’ll need to go and pick her up later this afternoon.  Said friend’s mom is a new Premier Designs consultant – I have a catalog in the car and must decide what I want to order.  It’s all so pretty!

Gracie is at the beach with my parents for the weekend.  She called home this morning and sounds like they’re having a lot of fun.  She found some great shells and said she saw a “king crab and a regular crab”.  Thank goodness for her Swimming Creatures of the Fifth Day book (I packed it for her to take along to reference!)

Ian has been spending his morning playing and watching “Night at the Museum”. I do believe I’m going to steal the tv soon, though, and take my computer to the living room and do some multi-tasking.  I think we’ll pop in the free copy of “Amazing Grace” that we got in Cincinnati a few weeks ago and I’ll actually start work on those forms.

It’s a pretty, sunny day here.  I bet Brian will do some gardening.  Our blackberry bushes are COVERED with blossoms.  It’s amazing to me how they took off compared to the blueberries.  I’m thinking we may have to dig the blueberries up and move them.

Speaking of blackberries, does anyone have a simple recipe for Blackberry Jam (with the seeds, please)?  I love that stuff and think we’ll have plenty of berries to make our own this year.

Well, I really should stop playing and get to work!

Please tell me what YOU are doing today!

Friday’s Fave Five #88

FFF spring

Always much to be thankful for – that’s why I love participating in this meme!

1. Gracie had the opportunity to go to the beach with my parents for the weekend.  They left yesterday and will return home on Sunday.  I’m so glad that my kids have such a good relationship with my parents and that they want to spend time together.  They called home earlier and were getting ready to go out and look for shells.

2. Saving over $110 dollars at the grocery store last night.  Thank goodness for coupons and a store, within an hour’s drive, that doubles $1  coupons.  It’s definitely worth the once-a-month trip.  We’re well stocked with both food and health & beauty products.

3. Family and being able to spend Mother’s Day with my parents, both brothers, and their families.  I got a very nice card from my kids, along with a Sheetz gift card, which I’ll use to buy frozen vanilla lattes (might I say they are to die for?!)  Ashley also picked out another homeschool mom t-shirt for me at convention last weekend, and Ian made me a great picture frame in Sunday School.  I am blessed!

4. The sunshine and warm weather that finally hit our part of PA today.  I have to confess that I was getting sick of the cold, wind, and rain! After awhile, that gets depressing.

5. Inko’s teas.  I discovered them at the grocery store last time we were there and picked up a few more last night (not enough, because I only have one left!)  I’ve tried Blueberry, White Peach, and Hint O’Mint – I’d recommend all 3 flavors.  I see a Cherry Vanilla flavor on the website – I’m guessing I’d like that one too.

Sometimes it’s the simple things in life that bring the most pleasure, isn’t it?  Now, I think Ian and I are going to head outside and enjoy this warm weather for a bit!

What are YOU thankful for this week?

Review opportunity for homeschoolers!

  • Are you a blogger with good writing skills?
  • Do you homeschool an older child(ren)? (7th - 12th grade)
  • Are you flexible with your schedule?
  • Are you good with deadlines?
  • Do you like sharing your opinion on things?
If you answered "yes" to ALL of the above,  please e-mail me  - I may have an opportunity you'd be interested in. :)

New Friend Friday – favorite childhood memory

Diana from The Girl Creative (responsible for my blog makeover!) hosts New Friend Friday each week.  Every week, I think “I should participate this week” then I get busy and never make the  time.  So, here is my first attempt at making new friends through New Friend Friday!  If you’re new to my blog, I hope you’ll take the time to look around, that you’ll find something you like, and decide to stick around (follow me).

NOTE: I’m hosting an fun giveaway for a large set of Magneatos from Guidecraft.  Please be sure to check out this post and sign up for your chance to win!

The Girl Creative

I was an only child for the first (almost) 15 years of my life. I had amazing parents who were always welcoming of my friends and allowed me to have friends over quite frequently.  But, I’d say that most of my favorite childhood memories probably involve times when we were with family – either visiting at my grandparents’ house on Sundays and spending time will all of my many cousins, or visiting with another aunt & uncle on Friday evenings and hanging out with my older cousins (who were like a sister and brother to me).

Other fond memories that I have of my childhood are family vacations.  We went to places like the New England states (I actually remember thinking all that scenery was boring, but I’d love to see it again – now – as an adult), Nashville, Williamsburg, etc.  We never went to Disney World until I was a senior in high school; but, obviously, that place made a huge impression on me.  Can you tell?

When I was 5, my dad was sent on an extended business trip to Italy; so my mom and I got to go along.  Actually, I celebrated my 5th birthday there and lost my first tooth that day as well.  I don’t recall it, but my mom said I screamed like a freak in the middle of the restaurant and they were quite embarrassed because, of course, nobody had any idea what I was saying!  I’m not really the “making a scene” type, so I find her story hard to believe.

I have lots of great memories – these are just some of the ones that popped into my mind when I read the topic for today.  I’ll be anxious to read about your childhood memories!  Diana’s memory was hilarious!  {Diana ~ I never sent a taxi to anyone’s house.  Where I lived, we never even saw taxis!  But, I have been known to make a prank call now and then. My friend and I would do them under the guise of conducting a survey. LOL I hope nobody’s reading this that was a target of one of our many calls! If my kids did that, I’d be so mad.  What were we thinking?!}

Random Dozen 5/12/10

1. Please share one memory of your high school graduation. Pics would be great!

I remember being a nervous wreck because I had to give a speech! I hated the last day of school every year because it meant leaving my friends behind for the summer months (plus, weird but true, I actually liked school!) So, graduation was much worse because it was so permanent. No pictures to share today – I was all red-eyed on the pictures!

2. What is one "emergency use" item you keep in your vehicle at all times?

Baby wipes. We don’t have a baby in diapers anymore, but those things are very multi-purpose. Did you know they’re great on stains?

3. In your region, do you celebrate graduation open houses? Addendum: (If so,) how many open houses/bridal showers/weddings are on your upcoming events calendar?

We have graduation parties.  Would you believe that I don’t have any party/shower plans on my calendar in the upcoming months?  Not yet, anyway. We do have a niece who graduates this year, so we shall see.

4. Tell me one truth you believe about motherhood.

It is a gift from God.

5. What was the last thing you broke?

A picture frame. I had it laying on the table to take to the CHAP convention for our advertising posters – I leaned over my computer and put my elbow on the frames, by accident, and the glass in the top one just shattered.  Oops!

6. On average, how many pieces of junk mail do you receive daily?

2-5.  I hate junk mail!  What’s really bad is when I go to the p.o. and all that’s in the box is junk mail – that’s depressing!

7. Do you like to shop by catalog?

I like to shop by any means that gives me the best deal!

Really, though, it depends on what I’m shopping for.  Some things are fine by catalog; others – like clothes – no way!

8. Is lawn maintenance at your house a "his job," a "her job" or "his/her job" or "that's why we have teenagers" job?

Definitely a “his job”. Brian does all the mowing, most of the gardening, and he takes orders quite well for the landscaping.  If I were in charge, I guarantee our yard wouldn’t look nearly as nice.

9. Which room would you like to redecorate in your home?

My bedroom!  It is the worst! But, Gracie’s room is next on the list.  We’ve decided on a theme – Asian – and think we’re going with a deep red and/or dark orangy-gold – and we bought the bedding set (dragon) – but that’s as far as we got.

Once her room is completed though, I’m definitely next on the list!

10. Do you read a newspaper regularly, or do you read most of your news on line?

No. As a matter of fact, when our subscription to our local weekly paper ran out, we chose not to renew. The paper was getting smaller and smaller – and essentially more boring.  All I read was the obituaries, yard sales, and real estate.  LOL

11. Do you believe everything happens for a reason?

Most definitely.  And, for the ones that I don’t yet understand, I’m waiting to find out the reasons in heaven! Life, though, is very much a matter of trust. I learn that more each and every day.

12. Are you more worried about doing things right, or doing the right things?

Both. I don’t think I can choose one of the other.  I’m very worried about doing things right – I’m a perfectionist in many ways.  But, I also want to be doing the right things.

Crossing Oceans by Gina Holmes

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Crossing Oceans
Tyndale House Publishers, Inc. (May 1, 2010)
by
Gina Holmes

Jenny Lucas swore she’d never go home again. But being told you’re dying has a way of changing things. Years after she left, she and her five-year-old daughter, Isabella, must return to her sleepy North Carolina town to face the ghosts she left behind. They welcome her in the form of her oxygen tank–toting grandmother, her stoic and distant father, and David, Isabella’s dad . . . who doesn’t yet know he has a daughter. As Jenny navigates the rough and unknown waters of her new reality, the unforgettable story that unfolds is a testament to the power of love and its ability to change everything—to heal old hurts, bring new beginnings . . . even overcome the impossible. A stunning debut about love and loss from a talented new voice.
If you would like to read the first chapter of Crossing Oceans, go HERE.

Gina Holmes began her career in 1998, penning articles and short stories. In 2005 she founded the influential literary blog, Novel Journey. She holds degrees in science and nursing and currently resides with her husband and children in southern Virginia. To learn more about her, visit May 2010's issue of CFOM at Interview with Gina Holmes or Novel Journey.

Roxie’s Review . . . If this is Gina Holmes’ first published novel, I anxiously await her second, and third.

I could not put this book down. I kept thinking that Jenny’s cancer diagnosis was a mistake and that all would come out well in the end. It did – but not as I’d expected.

I don’t remember actually crying as I read a book before – I’d cried over movies, but not a book. Well, I found myself sobbing out loud more than once as I read Crossing Oceans.

How sad it was – but how heartwarming. Love triumphed – love of family, friends, love of and for God.

I strongly recommend it!

Heidi Says . . . My mom told me that I better not read this book just yet – she knows I’m still dealing with the recent passing of my best friend. I had all intentions of taking her advice, but had a lull in my review book pile and decided to pick this one up.  I must echo my mom’s thoughts above – Wow!  Crossing Oceans absolutely does not read like a first novel!

Gina Holmes is an author to rival another favorite of mine – Nicholas Sparks. The similarity is that death is inevitable – it’s part of life. The difference is that Ms. Holmes adds the element of Christianity to her story, making it much more appealing to me. When you add God to the equation, death isn’t so scary or final – it’s not the end, but the beginning.

I’ll admit, I cried too – several  times. But sometimes crying is a good thing! I’ll definitely recommend Crossing Oceans and will be looking for more books from Gina Holmes.

Just a few things that are on my mind . . .

Talk About it TuesdayI thought I’d participate in Talk About it Tuesday this week because I have several things rolling around in my mind that don’t quite seem to qualify for their own blog post.

So, here goes ---

  1. I just started this blog around the beginning of the year, and I just realized that I already have 199 followers!  1 more and we’ll be at 200.  Will it be YOU?!  I’m feeling very loved right about now – what a nice feeling.
  2. I want to give a big shout out to my mom (even though she never reads my blog and probably wouldn’t even know how to find it).  She has been helping me with some of my book reviews, which has given me some extra time to actually pick up books that are not on a review pile!  I got to read a Mary Higgins Clark book last week (love her! Just Take My Heart is awesome – Ashley’s reading it now) and one of the Love Finds You in . . . books (that was a birthday gift from a very dear friend).
  3. I love homeschool curriculum.  Just sayin’ . . . (I’ll post about our choices for next year in a few weeks – probably when we get home from Florida.)
  4. We leave for Florida in exactly 10 days! Wow – I better start packing!  I tend to be a bit of a packing/planning freak, but I do wish some people would participate in this week’s Destination Disney topic – which is packing tips!

Do you have anything random to share today?

2 conventions down, 1 to go

I realized last week that I never posted any pictures or talked about our experience at the Midwest Convention in Cincinnati, OH.  Shame on me! For what it’s worth, though, I did share pictures on FB.

Anyway, we had a great time in Cincinnati.  We had a suite at the Hilton and the room was very comfortable.  We enjoyed – for once – being able to spread out a bit in the hotel!

conventions 009

We (The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine) had a prime location in the vendor hall – a double end booth.  We had so much room to spread out (almost too much!)  conventions 012

The new brown and blue totebags looked so nice and were a big draw to our table! I mean, seriously, who wouldn’t want one?!

conventions 013

We also had The 2010 Schoolhouse Planner available on cd.  Since the planner is “my baby”, it was exciting to see it in this format.

But, the absolute highlight of my weekend was having the opportunity to meet so many of my Crew members!  I’ve been working with some of these girls for almost 2 years now, so it was nice to finally meet up with them and be able to put faces with names.

conventions 018Do you know any of these great people from the blogosphere? If you’re not following their blogs, you should be! Let me introduce you (left to right)---

  1. Barbara from Alive in Spirit
  2. Regenia from Homeschool Reviews for You
  3. Penny from Homeschooling, Autism, & Stuff
  4. YOURS TRULY
  5. Lori from Loving Learning at Home
  6. Tim from Families Again
  7. Heidi from Chatter, Clatter, and Things That Matter
  8. Tristan from Our Busy Homeschool
  9. Shanna from Learning at His Feet

conventions 019

Another great thing was getting to meet my assistant and “I couldn’t live without her” Crew buddy, Brenda!   It’s amazing to me how efficiently we work together (much like all of TOS), having never even met (up until a few weeks ago).

conventions 025 I’ve had opportunity to work with MANY vendors over the past 2-3 years. There are always those who stand out above the rest – whether for a great product, wonderful customer service, or whatever.  One such company, to me, is Virginia Soaps & Scents, so I was just thrilled to be able to meet the lovely couple  behind this company – Roy & Richelle Spargur.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

conventions 040

This past weekend was spent at the CHAP convention in Harrisburg, PA. This is our “stomping grounds” convention – in other words, even without TOS, I’d have been at CHAP (with bells on)!  I love going to convention. I spent most of my time working in this lovely booth with the handsome Levi Suarez – I love meeting new people and introducing them to TOS.  But, I was also able to take some time and do the rest of my homeschool shopping for next year (but that will be in another post).

conventions 049 Friday night, when convention was over, my family joined the Suarez family for dinner at Texas Roadhouse (very yummy, but very loud!).  Afterwards, we spent some time hanging out and chatting in Starbuck’s. (I had a Dark Cherry Mocha and there’s only one word – YUM!)

conventions 046 As you can see, our little ones got along quite well!  I think Ian finally met his match in the “ham” department.  Don’t he and Sani look like they could cause some serious trouble?!  I sense a “you’re lucky you’re so cute” coming on!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

And our next stop on the TOS convention trail …

FPEA in Florida!

Will you be there too?  If so, be sure to stop by the TOS booth and say “hi”. When we’re not hanging out at convention, we’ll be visiting some awesome people and one of our favorite places in the World – Disney!

Guidecraft Magneatos Review & Giveaway

125_GC-Logo I promised that I’d have another great review & giveaway this week – and here it is:

t354_x4_092ddb31aba4f1dd963f72df3a77fcc4My kids received this awesome set of Magneatos from Guidecraft 2 weeks ago.  Even though they are geared for ages 2 and up, I knew that even Gracie (almost 10) would enjoy these.  She loves the little cheapy sets of rods and magnetic balls that you can buy at the dollar store (you know the ones that little kids swallow and get very sick?)  Anyway, she can entertain herself for hours with a set of those, so I knew the Magneatos would be a big hit.

spring 111 I was right!  Both Gracie and Ian dug right in and had a blast with the Magneatos.   The set we received is the 144 piece Jumbo Magnetic Construction set.  As a mother, I was quite impressed with the packaging.  I expected to open the outer box and find the pieces just all throw in.  No!  They come packaged in the styrofoam that you see in the picture on the left. All the balls together and all the rods together.  The rods come in 2 sizes. With Legos and other construction sets that we have, I usually end up purchasing a large plastic container to dump everything in. However, with the Magneatos, my kids enjoy putting everything back together in the styrofoam container – so I’m hoping it will hold up for awhile.

spring 112 Again, the mom in me is much impressed with the educational factor of this toy.  You can see in the picture at the right that Gracie has received some of the perfectionistic qualities that I have – she was always organizing the parts and making sure they matched up. This is a great activity for Ian too – he already knows his colors, but matching up the small and large rods by color was a great activity for him and kept him busy for a long time.  That’s great for a busy boy who doesn’t often want to sit still!

spring 113

I expected that, much like a box of Legos, the Magneatos would come with a “how to build” booklet of some sort.  They didn’t.  So, while Gracie looked at the pictures on the box to figure out how to construct a few things, she quickly figured out that the possibilities were endless and that she was limited only by her own imagination.  We discovered “houses” for stuffed animals and other interesting structures!

spring 123

And, yes, I’ll confess, even I have had my fair share of fun with Magneatos!  It’s very difficult to walk past the box and not stop and play with them!

These pieces are very well constructed and they have some powerful magnets in them! I have a 4-year-old boy who tends to be rather hard on things, and these Magneatos hold up quite well to his abuse. I believe they will look just as good after years of hard use as they do right now.

Magneatos come in various set sizes.  You can start small to see if your children will enjoy them, then add larger sets to expand your  collection.  I’d very much like to add the Jumbo Master Builder set because I know my kids would enjoy adding the panels, clips, and bendies to their Magneato creations!

Would you like to win this set of Magneatos?  I have a set just like mine to give away to one lucky reader!  Please visit Guidecraft and let me know your absolute favorite Guidecraft product (let’s pretend money is not an option!)

Would you like a few more chances to win?  If so, you may do any/all of the following for additional entries (please leave a separate comment for each one that you do):

  • Follow Guidecraft on Twitter
  • Like Guidecraft on Facebook
  • Follow the Guidecraft blog
  • Follow MY blog
  • Like Heidi’s Reviews & Reflections on Facebook
  • Follow HeidiSays on Twitter (even though I’m not a very good tweeter – yet!)
  • Put my (new!) button on your blog (2 entries)
  • Post about this contest with a link back (3 entries)
  • And for extra fun, tell me what you’d like to make with your Magneatos set!

This contest will remain open until 8am next Monday, May 17th. At that time, I will draw ONE random winner.  Good luck! Please note: Guidecraft will ship to U.S. addresses only.

I received this product for free from Guidecraft.
The thoughts expressed above are entirely my own.

Destination Disney – packing lists

As we pull the sections off of our paper countdown chain each day, I really that we are VERY CLOSE to our Disney trip! We leave on the 21st! I’m so anxious because I’ll get to help in the TOS booth at the FPEA convention, visit Disney World and my dear friend Mickey for a few days, and hook up with some of my favorite people in the whole wide world!

Anyway, as we prepare for our trip and are starting to think about packing, I’m wondering ---

WHAT IS ON YOUR PACKING LIST?
Is there something special that you always remember to pack when going on a Disney vacation?
Or, if you’ve never visited Disney, but have a family-friendly packing idea that is a MUST KNOW, please share with the rest of us.

ANY and ALL packing advice and ideas are welcome this week!

Uncover Exciting History by Amy Puetz

Amy Puetz

This school year, my girls and I have been studying U.S. history, using All American History (published by Bright Ideas Press).  While I like this study/curriculum in some ways, there are other areas in which I feel it is lacking.  One such way is the writing.  I’m simply not impressed with the author’s writing style and I don’t like how it jumps back and forth and isn’t the nice chronological approach we were used to with The Mystery of History.

So, I was very excited at the change to review Uncover Exciting History by Amy Puetz.  I had heard her name before, but not had opportunity to view any of her products.  This e-book came at just the right time.  We were in need of a much-needed break from our history text – so we started reading a chapter of Uncover Exciting History each day until we got caught up to where we were in our study.  Now we go back and forth.

We’ve all enjoyed Amy’s writing style.  It makes the history that we’re studying seem so much more “real” and applicable.  The history stories just really came to life once we read Amy’s version. Now, looking back on our school year, we find ourselves discussing what we read in Uncover Exciting History much more than we do what was in the actual textbook. I will definitely consider purchasing other resources from Amy in the future.

Here’s what Amy’s website says about the book:

Uncover Exciting History

History Is Not Boring!

What is history anyway? It is the story of real people who did real things. For history to be fun for everyone (even those who think they hate history), it must go beyond hard facts and meaningless dates to the real people who made the significant events happen. People like George Washington, who bravely crossed the partly frozen Delaware River to attack the British at Trenton. Stories like that of the bold Americans who bravely fought against the Barbary pirates during the little-known Barbary War show how interesting history is.

True History Is Exciting!

Here are some of the stories in this book:

  • Discover how the U.S. created the Constitution
  • Experience the miraculous victory at the Battle of New Orleans
  • Explore America's expansion west
  • Uncover one of America's best weapons used during World War II

This book is great for:
  • History Buffs
  • Those who want the story behind the event
  • Adults who want a snapshot view of American history
  • Homeschool families, either as a read aloud or for students 12 and up

In this 184 page book you will meet some of America's most famous people like George Washington and some of her not so famous people like Daniel Webster. Click here to see the table of contents. There are also four bonus chapters! The first bonus chapter is about famous mothers and the next three are about famous explorers.
Bonus Chapters:
  • The Hand That Rocks the Cradle: Mothers Who Changed the World Through Their Children
  • Medieval Explorer: Marco Polo
  • Evangelistic Explorer: David Livingstone
  • Daring Explorer of Antarctica: Robert Falcon Scott

And here’s a bit about the author:

Amy Puetz

Amy Puetz is a homeschool graduate and servant of Christ. In 2001 she earned a degree as a computer graphic designer and began A to Z Designs. Over the years she has made t-shirts, cards, and books that reflect her passion for Christ and her love for history. Because of a chronic illness (fibromyalgia) she has developed an online business that will allow her to work from home. Her other interests are writing for her column in HomeSchool Enrichment Magazine, doing contract design work for others, and creating historical costumes. To read an article that she wrote for the Homeschoolers of Wyoming newsletter click here. She works with the Wyoming state organization as a layout designer for the newsletter.

Random Dozen 5/5

1. What was the last thing about which you procrastinated?

I guess you could say that I’m procrastinating right now . . . I have 3 lasagnas to make today and I want to attempt to recreate another Italian dish. I should be working on them while my kids are still in bed!

2. How long does it take you to fall asleep, and do you sleep through the night?

It just depends --- I almost always read for awhile before even attempting to go to sleep.  Some nights I fall right to sleep, other nights I lay there thinking forever! Some nights I sleep straight through; others – probably directly dependant upon what and how much I’ve had to drink in the evening – I wake up having to go to the bathroom!

3. Which decade would you choose to exemplify your favorite fashion styles?

Well, I love the 1800’s – think Southern plantations. I can’t believe I’m saying this because I NEVER wear dresses – but they are just so beautiful.  However, I’m thinking that after about 2 hours in that world, I’d be ready to come back to now.  I just wanna wear my own (comfy) thing!

4. What is your personal best dish to feed a crowd?

It’s probably a toss-up between Lasagna and Stromboli.  They are my most requested dishes with MY family.  Brian’s family always picks my mac & cheese.  (The lasagnas I’m making today are to feed 2 crowds – 1 that my mom is hosting this Friday evening, and another when we go to Florida in a couple of weeks.)

5. Are you an impulse shopper? What was the last thing you bought on impulse?

No.  I’m always looking for a bargain, so I’m a more focused shopper, I think.

6. What is one wish you have for your own funeral?

That someone’s life will be touched in a positive way (even if just one life is changed, it’s all worth it!)

I also agree with the other participants who have said “closed casket”. Here’s one area where I have to disagree with my friend Sue (in love, of course) --- she felt that viewings and open caskets were a necessary thing for closure. I can see her point; yet would prefer people to remember me alive.

7. If it's true that joy is in found in the simple things in life, what does your joy look like today?

Sunshine.  Getting my eyebrows waxed (in addition to Monday’s haircut, I’ll really be a new woman). Doing school with the girls – winding down our year. Seeing my great-grandmother’s irises blooming in my backyard (I’ll share pictures later).  And all the blossoms that are on my blackberry bush!

8. What is your favorite type of bread?

Any type of homemade or artisan bread.  I’m a bread snob – none of that storebought bread in a plastic bag with a twister for me – no way!

9. What trait do you fear developing the most? (Laziness, greediness, grumpiness, etc.)

Insincerity.

10. What trait would you like most to develop?

Well, I think I’ll refrain from putting it in print, because you just never know! :)

11. Which room in your house best reflects your personality? Why?

This sounds silly, but probably my bathroom! I love the color scheme in there and the old enamelware bowls that I have hanging on the walls.

12. How do you maintain balance in your life regarding, work, family, church, other organizations and activities, and blogging?

I don’t. ‘Nuff said.  I’m just not a good organizer of my time. What is that trait called?  Maybe I should have put that down for #10.

Would you like to have a book character named after YOU?

When I was little, I used to imagine that I could jump into my favorite books.  Even as an adult, I still can get very wrapped up in a book and feel like I’m there.

Yesterday, my friend Jennifer from New Leaf Press shared a really neat opportunity with me – and I want to, in turn, pass it along to you, my readers ---

Julie Cave, author of Deadly Disclosures and the Dinah Harris Trilogy,  is kicking off a great contest STARTING TODAY to increase Facebook fans. Julie will be naming 2 characters in her next book after 2 of her Facebook fans - 1 current fan and 1 new fan. The contest runs thru May 27.

A few more details:

  • The first winner will have become a facebook fan of Julie Cave before May 4th and will have successfully invited at least one new fan.
  • The second winner will be someone who becomes a facebook fan of Julie Cave after May 4th. All new fans must report who invited them on Julie’s fan page.
  • Any facebook fan who also subscribes to the RSS feed at www.juliecave.com will be entered into the contest a second time.

Simple enough, right?  So if you’ve always dreamed of ACTUALLY BEING IN a book, here’s your big chance!  Go for it!  And, if you win, be sure to stop back here and let me know – I want to read the book! :)

Guidecraft School Library Cart Review & Giveaway

125_GC-Logo Last week, I was contacted by Guidecraft and asked to review some items from their product line. If you’re not familiar with Guidecraft products, I’d highly encourage you to check them out. Their products appeal to me for various reasons – the two biggest being as a mother who is always looking for educational toys for my kids and as a homeschool family with limited storage space. These were the things I was thinking of as I browsed the online catalog in search of the perfect product(s) to review.

t354_3d16e4dd31500a3c9474c5c309c10f47 The first product I was attracted to was the School Library Shelf.  I must preface this by saying that we have A LOT of school books and resources! I’m a confessed bookaholic, for one thing; and, thanks to my job with the TOS Homeschool Crew, I have an overabundance of books, curriculum, and other products to support my habit.  Our dining room doubles as our school room; so in addition the table and china cabinet, the room is filled with two computer stations, a piano, and a 5-shelf bookshelf.  My piano was covered with books to review and the bottom cupboards of my china cabinet were filled with school books!  Enter the School Library Shelf ---

spring 104 First of all, I should tell you that this arrived on a Friday morning, and Ashley and I (being the impatient females that we are) decided to put it together.  The first step was removing all the parts from the  box.  I got a little worried because I didn’t see the assembly instructions anywhere. Finally, we found them all rolled up in one of the boxes containing hardware.  I had to laugh when I opened them – these instructions were definitely either designed by or for a male!  They contain NO WORDS, just pictures! (if you’re curious, you can see them here)

spring 106 Once we had everything laid out and we made sure everything was there, we set to work.  We installed the casters first. I have to admit that we didn’t use all the washers. I thought it was just me – not knowing exactly how to work the tools – but we later discovered that some of the holes weren’t quite large enough for the screws to fit down into – instead they rested more on the surface.  To me, it wasn’t a problem – and does not seem to have an effect on the finished product in the least.

spring 109

The hardest part of the assembly was putting the 2nd side on. We had trouble keeping it steady and matching up all the holes. spring 110 But, once we did, we got it together quickly and ended up with this. Ian looks quite proud, but really he was more of a hindrance than a help.

spring 114 And how does it look in our schoolroom, you ask? The lighting isn’t good here, but you can see how we’ve filled it. Right now, it’s got all of the girls’ current school stuff on it AND next years’ (what we have already purchased or had on hand).  And, it’s barely filled!  spring 116 (this side is Gracie’s – the other side is Ashley’s).  It makes a nice little “computer nook” area and fits just perfectly where I wanted it.  The shelves on the ends are holding our daily planners.

And guess what?  This freed up the large bookshelf for all of MY stuff – teacher books, resources (dictionaries, etc.), and my review books!  We were able to clean out the china cupboard and fill it with games – which before were just piled up in the corner of the room!

This homeschool mama is a happy girl!  And, guess what the very best part is?  YOU, too, can have a Guidecraft School Library Shelf of your very own.  How, you ask?  First of all, please visit Guidecraft and let me know what product you absolutely love and would like to have for your very own! (this is a mandatory entry)

But, there’s more --- if you really want to win this shelf, you may do any/all of the following for extra entries (please leave a separate comment for each one that you do):

  • Follow Guidecraft on Twitter
  • Like Guidecraft on Facebook
  • Follow the Guidecraft blog
  • Follow MY blog
  • Like Heidi’s Reviews & Reflections on Facebook
  • Follow HeidiSays on Twitter (even though I’m not a very good tweeter – yet!)
  • Put my (new!) button on your blog (2 entries)
  • Post about this contest with a link back (3 entries)

This contest will remain open until 8am next Monday, May 10th (can you believe it’s May?!) At that time, I will draw ONE random winner.  Good luck!  And, if you don’t win this, don’t fret – I have another Guidecraft product to review and give away next week!  Be sure to check back.  Please note: Guidecraft will ship to U.S. addresses only.

I received this product for free from Guidecraft.
